Hi all,

I have read searched and read many threads on this frequented topic, but found no exact answers to my questions.

I am a newbie, I want a simple protein shake. I understand that I should get Impact Whey Protein (myprotein.co.uk) - correct?

Is it drinkable on its own, or are the flavourings worth it?

How much protein should I have in a shake?

Thanksm

Yes it will be fine

It is fine on its own, although some people eat/drink for taste rather then for function, and seem to need every flavouring possible to be able to handle downing a shake which takes 5 seconds

Depends on whole diet, but general rule is about 35-40g of protein, so about 50g of whey

Oh and MP9167 if you are ordering from MP for the 1st time, for 5% off.

This is probably contrary to what most people here would tell you, but if you are a newbie I really don't think you need protein supplementation. A well rounded clean diet will serve you better than a protein shake. I've yet to see any real need for supplementation in beginners.

I've changed from myprotein and now get my whey (and most other supplements) from here http://www.bulksupplementsdirect.co...bsd_optimise_milk_protein_concentrate_82.html It's of the highest quality and also comes in sealed 1kg bags. So if you buy 5kg the other 4kg stays as fresh as possible until you need it, which is one point I really like.

If you use that site use the code BSD18 for an extra 5% off ;)

The whey from myprotein and BSD are easily drinkable on their own in water, very neutral tasting.

Anywhere between 30g-40g depending on your needs per shake.

a lot more expensive than myprotein? £42.50 compared to £27.50 for 10lb (ish).

You could apply that to everything in life though regarding food, drink & taste? I don't know when everyone became so anti-taste? :p

Look at addressing your diet before you start supplimenting with additional protein. There's no quick fix and boshing some impact whey every day isn't going to turn you into an over-night Cutler.

Contrary to some recommendations, if the shake is to be used post-workout with oats, I'd recommend flavouring :) Studies have shown that sweet tastes contribute to the insulin release assosciated with simple carbohydrates and sugary foods :)

Hardly. There's arguments that the flavouring can impede the effectiveness of your nutrition plan ala my previous post re: sweet tastes.

And it's hardly the same, this is necking a liquid in a matter of seconds, not enjoying a meal or savouring a bevvy ;)

The insulin release helps more if you're also taking creatine though really.

However I agree entirely. You need to workout your diet before thinking about taking protein powder, it's a supplement, not a replacement. Though to achieved a high ratio of protein to carbs it's quite tough eating well and enough protein, however address your gym routine and diet first.

AS for BSD being more expensive, well from what I've seen of the market, the quality of the product exceeds MP categorically - however they are a smaller company so obviously their prices will be elevated to start with, however I do not like the MP monopoly and frankly I'm more interested in quality. :)

Not even worth thinking about....

Wouldn't recommend oats with any post workout shake either. Whey + wazy maize would be my choice.

BSD users - have you tried regenerate? Been thinking of giving it a go for a while now, reviews look pretty positive and the price isn't too bad.

Hmmm, not really sure where you got those prices from for MP?

The cheapest they do is 5kg for £32 using the pricematcher as far as I know of??

Haven't tried that one but have tried their Reloaded and that's very good. The reloaded does look a decent product actually... haven't looked at it properly before as I'm not a fan of the all in one products, most companies just as a couple of useful ingredients and then pack them out with crap.

Saying that I'd still rather buy my own stuff seperately...

Ordered some regenerate (using BSD18 ;p) will let you know what I think in the next few weeks.

So at least £10 cheaper :)

...why is it worth £10 more?
Well it all depends what you want and expect I suppose. I know BSD use the highest quality whey available, it's cold-filtered and as undamaged as possible. Only trouble is it costs more.

Or you can go for MP's which as long as you use the pricematcher (why can't they just sell it at this price to everyone?) is unbeatable value for money. Though is it a false economy if it's lower quality??

A 25% saving on 5kg is quite a lot though I agree!!

Choice is yours...?

the protein they have is of almost identical quality to the MP stuff. They both use the same method to get their protein.

Infact afaik the testing is post process and the percentage is essentially the bioavailable protein available, just over 90% from both companies. BSD simply cost more because they are smaller, so they buy their protein in smaller quantities at a higher cost.

Frankly same thing much cheaper and its closer to a 40% saving when you use pricematching.

To be quite honest, theres probably not a huge number of labs in europe knocking up massive quantities of whey, I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if its made and shipped from the same place.

you're a newbie to the gym or you're a newbie to shakes?

Chances are that if you are a whole fitness/gym newbie then you definately dont need shakes as they are for people who cant get enough protein in their diet already for the work they do.
