Beijing 2008 Olympiad

Im sorry but he really should have gone for it

the arrogance to ease up in an Olympic 100m final and look at the crowd was a class touch, it was the ultimate "can't touch this" to everyone.....the fact he sacrificed a better time is irrelevant for me.

one of the best moments in sport i've ever witnessed, haven't seen a god like performance since MJ retired ;)

Just thinking about what events are left, I think there's two more golds left for us, nothing more really...I reckon 5th would be excellent.
There are loads more medal chances left actualy.

Gold medals almost definately in mens and womens sprint cycling, mens team pursuit, and don't forget Shanaze Reade in the BMX. There is also the madison where we should medal well, possibly gold.

Also Phillips Idowu in the triple jump maybe a medal winner and could be gold.

Cassie Patten and David Davies in the 10km open water swimming are both gold medal contenders.

Christine Ohuruogu in the 400 could well be a silver if not gold if she does really well.

The showjumping team event is still going on and the individual event is another madal chance for Britain, also the individual dressage event.

There are some more sailing events still to finish off, and some of the boxers are still in contention.

I am sure there are others but I cannot think of them off the top of my head.

Boxing is the only, or pretty much the only sport in the olympics in which you can't be a professional and compete, though I have no idea why, its ridiculous. Its essentially making it the only sport where the best boxers have entirely no reason to bother with the olympics.

The top Japanese Kierin riders also don't bother with the Olympics either as it gets in the way of their earnings.

I always thought it was to stop the goggles strap slipping during the race, but im not certain.

That is part of it, however if you take a close look, the first cap they have on is a latex cap with their goggles over it. Then over the latex cap and goggles, they put on a silicon cap.
It's a well known that silicone caps are faster than latex caps.
If you have ever worn just a silicone cap, they tend to slip off and bunch up before, during, and after a race. So with that in mind, I think that the latex and silicon cap pairing do a combination of things for the swimmer:

1. Smooths out the cap for less resistance
2. Keeps the cap from bunching up while swimming
3. Keeps your goggles on and lowers the resistance on the strap.

I typically compete with my goggle strap under my cap anyway, and hate silicone caps, so have never done the two cap thing, not that I am fast enough for it to matter anyway.

Congratulations to all TeamGB rowers.

This has to be my best piece of commentary from the Olympics for me:

"The British are coming, the British are coming"

Made me go all funny when he said that. Not often you hear that sort of patriotism in this country.

Just been catching up on the events. Gold and silver in the cycling, my Union Jack undies are going on for that.

That post is useless without pics

Britain are now 3rd in the overall rankings!!! :D Not sure how long that will last but still pretty dam impressive considering the size!

Awesome weekend of Olympics, especially on BBC HD.

I think bolts has made a good move financially, extending sponsership deals as hes bound to break the WR again, I'm pretty convinced he can touch 9.5, tying his shoelaces might be a good start :p

4 years ago, Matt Emmons was well on course for an Olympic gold in the 50m rifle three position shooting event, until, on the very last shot, he mistakenly shot the wrong target, got no points, and dropped to eighth place overall.

Yesterday, he again led the same event in China, held a healthy >3 point lead going in to the last round, and simply needed to place the last shot somewhere near the middle to claim a gold. Except he misfires his gun while aiming, barely hits the board, and ends up fourth!

Poor bloke, that's got to be so gutting. Even the Chinese guy looked slightly embarrassed to have won.

Cavic had nothing to do with the appeal over the Phelps/Cavic finish in the 100 Fly. Despite snatching defeat from the jaws of victory he is still very happy with what he achieved - his life time goal was to become an Olympic Medalist.

It's interesting to read things like this coming from world class athletes.
