280GTX and 4870X2 Owners: What PSU's are You Using (Watts)

I was using a Corsair 620 with my 4870X2 but I had to unplug a few drives and wind my cpu OC back 600Mhz for the card to be stable:/ I've since ordered a 750 pc power & cooling unit. :)

Thanks for the info so far guys, keep it coming :)Bizarre what was your full spec with that 620W psu before and after you got stability? :)

I was using a 800w tagan bz series modular psu.. It was pretty then it blew up :/

Now using an enermax modu82+
hi Hutch

I'm presuming that is the 625w version?. Thinking about this for my next pSU (currently got a Liberty 500W). Which gfx card are you running, and the rest of your system?

Q6600 @ 3.8Ghz, 2X2GB pc8000, Asus Rampage, 36GB Raptor, 3x 500GB .11's, 2x sammy DVD RW's, 1x LG GGC5 BR-R, 6x 120mm + 2x 92mm fans, fc03 fan controller, xfi xtreme-g and of course a 4870X2. I think that's about everything.

I'd of thought the hx620 would have easily been enough to power that lot but I had to unplug 2 of the Seagate drives and clock the cpu to 3.2Ghz to get the system completely stable. Maybe I just had a duff one.

Corsair HX 1000W with my GTX280.
Yeah i know, overkill

That's the PSU Driver Heaven has just used to for its TRI 280 GTX SLI vs 4870X2 CrossfireX Skulltrail analysis. The spec of their test system was about as demanding as anyone could envisage.

Without question one of the best quality PSUs currently on offer, and I'd say very reasonably priced - seen it for as low as 145. Very wise investment, overkill or otherwise!:)

Taken a good look at your Comp lately? NOW THATS OVERKILL!

Do lots of video encoding, got tired of Nvidia's boards slaughtering my memory and being pathetic at running Quad cores, though I still preferred their video cards over ATI's....which left only one "illogical" choice.:)

Maybe not the "smartest" purchase but very stable and will certainly see me through a couple of Nehalem generations...

EDIT - Oh, and I haven't needed the central heating on since March.

LOL who has? :)

BTW nice setup, is that a "skulltrail" mobo? Seems more generic from the description.

[edit]Doh.. of course it is, been looking at so many 5400 series Workstation boards my brain is fried :) [/edit]

Meh thats just a vicious rumour.. :D

On topic.. (ish) what sort of temps do you get? And what does that thing sound like with all those fans? Were you not tempted to watercool it?

The loudest fan is the one on the south bridge, took a little getting used to, though not as bad as the tri-fin delta's used in PC P&Cs TurboCool PSUs, at least in my view! Temps approach 70 degrees (Realtemp) at max load (that’s when running 8x Prime 95 small FFT). I've always found high-end air cooling sufficient, I’m at stock most of the time and only OC for the odd benchmark, it might seem like a bit of a waste but the system isn't soley for gaming and optimal stability is important to me.

In keeping with the topic, I’ve been long considering replacing these Ultras with a couple of 280s, though as the drivers have only just materialized, I may hold off for the 55nm revision.

I have the OCZ 700W GameXStream Power Supply.
Not sure if it works with the 4870x2 GPU yet as i've had to order a 6pin to 8pin power adaptor. Didnt think an adaptor would be so expensive! Not sure why HIS didnt supply one with the card but others did

ocz elitezstream 1000W for £69.99 (almost new:D) which is without doubt the best 1000W psu you can buy for any money. :D Even at £146 new price.

80 amps onn a single rail plus 4 8 pin (6+2) pci leads and very generous lenght of all the leads for your tower case.
