Hi,

I'm 25, working for the government. Totally bored at work. I have a 2:2 in Earth Science and 4 years work experience in environment planning.

I have decided that I'm going to give the Royal Air Force a go. I'm really unfit, lost a stone last 5 weeks so the ball is rolling.

In case the Royal Air Force doesn't come off I need a backup plan but am totally lost as to what to do.

I had looked into teaching, but im not that convinced. I'm also looking at doing a masters in Geotechnical Engineering with a view to getting into oil/gas/renewables sector.

I dunno what to do, its getting depressing. Don't think I can hack my current employer much longer.

Any suggestions, ideas regarding my future?

You could get into the oil industry now with that degree, definately into oil rig work as like a mud logger I know it sounds crap but with a degree behind you, you could get promotion fairy easily after about 6 months work.

I also work for the government, it sucks and I have been theere 4 and a half years, so I know the feeling!

Being in government and bored, the ideal solution is to get a part-time degree whilst at work, like an MSc/PhD/MBA. You might even get your workplace to sponsor you :p

Looked into that, unless the degree is going to benefit the company like a business/accounting etc degree(which I have no interest in) they wont sponsor you. Part time degree is a good option however again you are limited in what you can do, again the stuff im interested in doing you cant do part time.

How can you not justify Geotechnical Engineering if you are working in Environment Planning??

He probably could if theres a job where he works that requires it, I dunno what sector he's in but even getting a sponsorship isnt easy and the places are very limited(from my experience)

What are you applying for in the RAF?

Officer application can take many many months, normally at least a year.

Supply Officer, I know takes bloody ages. Even with such short shortages.

I'll see what logger jobs are about now.

Seriously, taking this job was the biggest mistake of my life. Government jobs are a waste of tax payers money, my time. Servers no purpose........ must not rant, must stay positive...... :)

If you want out of that quickly I suggest looking at non-commissioned roles.

Sure you'll not be on anywhere near as much pay etc, but you will be in within 6 months and you always have the chance to apply for a commission later on.

yeh i hear what your saying. Given my qualifications and age, I kinda need the Officers pay, benefits and responsibility to keep me on me toes.

I'm sure you've researched it all quite a bit but if you need any help I'll be glad to have a chat with you, I looked in to applying as an officer very extensively so I know quite a lot about the process.

Take a look at the student room's armed forces section, there are a stack of people applying for the RAF (and Army/RN) there. Also check out e-goat.

Random question alert - why the RAF?

I don't want to be at sea for months on end, so that ruled out the Navy. I would really liked to based abroad but not at sea all that time.

The Army, basically don't want to be that close to the frontline :)

I understand theres an interview at the AFCO, envolving family history, current job, my activities, why i want to join RAF, world affairs.

Then off to CRamwell for a couple of days, psychometric tests, medical, 2nd interview, team building exercises.

Then after that they offer you a place on IOT.

My only stumbling block is fitness.

I looked into joining the army as an officer around 3 months ago. They said the application takes around a year and sandhurst only take on new recruits i think 3 times a year. Soemthing to think about as I can see the raf being pretty similar
