Extended Warranty - worth it?

I'm on the verge of buying an LCD television and I've been offered a 5 year on site extended warranty for an additional 10% of the purchase price. Now in general I wouldn't bother with an extended warranty as it either fails right away or not at all. But an LCD TV is a £500+ investment that I'll expect to keep for years.

Do I spend the extra 10%?

It will depend on the make of the telly IMO. If it was a decent make like Panasonic, Sony or Toshiba I'd give it a miss. If it was a make I'd not heard of then yes. Having said that I took out a 3 year G/tee on my Tosh telly when I bought it, but given the price of a decent 32" LCD Telly these days I would give it a miss.

Sometimes when moving house after owning the TV for a few years, the TV can get damaged in the move, smashed up in the van or dropped down the stairs accidentally...

some places do offer 5 years free warranty in store and online which can be price matched to the shop you are looking at :)

bought a samsung lcd and took it out. first brand spanking new telly I've bought for years and decided it was worth it, ended up being 5 years for approx 5%. We have a very expensive washer dryer, extended warranty is £72 a year. Any guesses for how many chargeable service calls we have made this year alone, and how many times we could have bought the same washer again if we had not got the service warranty....Anyone who said 5 is about right, we average a call a month a year, latest call out was today, new heater element, thermal protection fuse and call out. If we had to pay this, it would have been £100 plus. You take your chances...

hotpoint. doesn't mean I think they're bad, we just seem to be unlucky with this one. my point is that in our case it has saved us a fortune, but mileage will differ of course

Yeah, Hotpoint aren't a disaster brand. You've definately been well of with the extended warranty. Generally, though, I don't go for extended warranty as it'd cost megabucks to have extended warranties on everything, more than a new item would cost!

Warranty is never a bad thing unless grossly over priced, my advice would be to get it as its better safe than sorry.
