Traffic lights: Ped parts facing drivers

So the bit where pedestrians push the button is facing the oncoming drivers and there are two of these boxes much higher up the pole than normal also, rather than have a 'cross' sign they have a large man that turns red or green. So when the lights are red for drivers, you have lights half way up the pole showing green. Has anyone else seen this? Most of the traffic lights in my area are like this now and it seems stupid and dangerous.

Yup, very dangerous, and very annoying and inconvenient as a pedestrian. I've seen people go through long-standing red lights where these things have been installed, presumably because they see a green light on the pole.
