Hey guys, taking my 360 apart doing the xclamp mod and ran out of nail polish remover, would white spirit be any good?

Or any other common household stuff?

Whatever you do dont use white spirit as itll leave a residue behind, nip into your local chemist and pick up some isopropyl alcohol, shouldnt be to expensive.

Akasa TIM clean is fantastic for the job as well, drop or two on some kitchen roll and all the paste just comes right off. Far, far better than kitchen roll or tissue alone.

(Plus it smells AWESOME! :p)

This. You'll get 500ml of isopropyl alcohol for the cost of a teeny little bottle of 'TIM remover', which contains virtually the same stuff anyway :) Isopropyl alcohol is also a great LCD screen cleaner, diluted 50:50 with distilled/deionised water and sprayed onto a lint free cloth. Again, that's exactly what the big stores sell as "Monitor cleaner" for 10x the price.

I have always used aftershave.

Evaporates and leaves no residue. TBH anything with a high alchohol content will work.

I use white spirit, the non-smelly version from focus diy. Ive always used white spirit as it does a brilliant job and ive never personally seen any film/residue left behind.

I once bought a bottle of that akasa tim cleaner and was disappointed with the results and the fact it made things stink of jif lemon... lol made me want to cook pancakes.

The lemony smell after cleaning actually got me worried about the performance of it. Surely if the die or heatspreader still stinks of lemon then there is a residue there

Yep Akasa TIM cleaner leaves a residue due to the citric solvent it uses...

Artic Clean is the same thing (well bottle 1 is) just that the 2nd bottle removes the residue. Use IPA and youll have no problems with it...

The reason i would never use white spirits is due to my work, im a painter and decorator and i hate handling the stuff. We sometimes use it for thinning solvent based paints or varnishes, or for degreasing metal that is clogged with grease and grime. It's certainly not stuff i would reccomend using near sensitive electronic components.

But a 'pure' organic solvent is all you need - white spirit fits that bill - not ideal but does the job...
