Mr.B hows the system going now? I really want to run Vista 64 bit with a 4870x2.

At first i didn't have any crashes for days with the X2 and thought everything was good... and now i've had 2. But! they are extremely rare, for instance i've left games running over night for 8+ hours to test it, plus my PC never gets turned off, it's on 24/7, and out of all this testing and running it constantly it's happened once on the desktop, and once with Gears of War. It's the usual thing, black screen, then "display driver stopped responding".

But atleast this time it happens so rare i can live with it - if i was to play a game for hours or leave one running all night, chances are it will not happen. With the 4870 it sometimes happened within first 5 minutes of play, and about 3+ times a day on the desktop. Nothing like this with the X2, it's fine 99.999% of the time.
If i was you i'd get the X2, it might not even happen at all with you...

@ d3sbo, it's not the vista install. I've done a clean installed twice and this happens to many people with clean installs aswell, plus it does not happen with Nvidia cards.

Yup - to confirm I've had 2 of these black screen blips/ driver stopped responding crashes also since last Thursday, and this is on a totally clean install of vista 64. Both times have been when i was just on the desktop.

Have to say I'm a bit woried about this, and having been with nvidia for the last 5 years or so, I'm also very worried about the quality of ATI's drivers. They seem like a bit of a shambles having done some more investigation. I can't believe they've released a flagship card like this and haven't released a set that works properly, and nails everything. (I've tried the ones on the CD that came with the card and am now on the 8.8 betas.)

Currently running two screens off my 4870x2 with no problems under X64, drivers off the disc that came with the card.

EDIT - I should say that's with running 2 screens
too, which this problem seems to be focused around is it not?

Do you have a 4870 or X2 wunkley?

And yeah it seems to happen mostly with 2 screens, although with the 4870 i did still get it even when physically unplugging a screen and reinstalling the drivers (but i do have a 2560x1600 screen... maybe it has something to do with high res?)... dont know if it will still happen with one screen and the X2, but it happens so rarely on this X2 i'd probably have to run a game for a whole day and even then it might not happen, so i cant be bothered with that....

4870x2 here.

Hiya everyone,

I would just like to clarify that the "Display driver stopped responding" message, is this an actual fault with the ATI Radeon 4870 graphics card (Hardware Issue) or a driver based issue (Software Issue)? Since I am now experiencing this issue unfortunately. :(

If it can be both.
Overclocking the gfx card can do that as well.

Sounds more like a driver issue to me which means it'll likely be fixed eventually.

Unfortunately for ATI, much as I wanted to switch to them, I can't afford to wait for them to sort out their crappy drivers and have just ordered a GTX280.

Explain why your always having to wait for ati to fix crappy drivers & i don't ;)
And seeing as i have been on multi gpu since the 1900xtx i should have allot more problems than most others.

Seems to be a Driver issue. Wouldn't hold your breath waiting for ATI to fix this, apparently they have had this problem since 7 series drivers.

Do you have Vista? dual displays?

You wont be disappointed, while my X2 is faster than my 280 was i've not really found it that much better, it's not £130 faster thats for sure.

That is how I've ran all my ATI cards. I despise the CCC. Just the driver and ATI Tray Tools from the 9800Pro till my last ATI card the 2900Pro.

Give it a bash Talrinys :).

ATi Tray tools gives won't work in x64 because it needs a signed driver. I take it your not using x64.

Can you set the fanspeed with ATT for the 4870?

"Always" ?

I'm referring to this specific issue. ATI obviously have a major problem with their 64-bit Vista drivers and dual monitors which doesn't look like they're in any hurry to fix.

This alone has driven me back to the green camp.

I don't have that problem tho with my 3 monitors & im on vista 64 ultimate & 3 way crossfire 3870.

The clue is right there in my post as to why i don't get the problems as many others.

Yeah my next card will not be an AMD card, i won't make that mistake again.

Nope, on XP and will be staying here for as long as possible. Tried Vista, looked nice but really wasn't anything special so I reverted back.

As VortexA1 has said below, he has it working though on Vista x64 ;).

I have vista 64 and use ati tools (0.27b4) with no problem with signing. :)
