Tried a £70 HDMI cable

Improved Detail
Enhanced Edge Definition
Increased Picture Stability
Great Contrast
Punchy Image
Powerful and Dynamic Audio
Colourful Picture
Improved Clarity
Bold Sound
Reduced Noise
Natural & Subtle Sound

A few of the reasons why 'What Hi Fi Sound & Vision' claim a £50 to £200 HDMI cable is better than a £3 one. Surely they can't be making this up :)

Do you ride the short bus?

So the image will be oversharp and unrealistic

Increased Picture Stability

I never knew a picture was drunk or could sway around

Great Contrast

I can adust the contrast on my tv from the menu

Punchy Image

Olympics are in beijing, not your living room

Colourful Picture

As before with contrast, I can adjust that through the menu system.

Powerful and Dynamic Audio

Volume control works wonders

Improved Clarity
Bold Sound
Reduced Noise
Natural & Subtle Sound

Erm...... contradictions galore............. BOLD -> Lower noise -> Subtle :rolleyes:

Ahhh the joys of what hi-fi :D:D:D:D

Working in the marketing department of these companies must be great...you get to make up **** all day long:p

I run a 10m HDMI-HDMI from skyHD to projector. Cannot tell the difference between a £300 sevenoaks supplied item and a £15 "gold plated heavy duty" item from ebay.

HDMI cables seem to be HDMI cables to me.

jez thanks for that i knew once over 5 metres it suppose to be best to get better hdmi but if you notice no difference in the 10 metre ones m8 i can get them for my sub and hide it in the corner

Borrowed a £70 HDMI-HDMI Chord HDMI 1.3 Silver Plus cable to test with Oppo 983 and Pioneer Plasma. Can't spot any picture quality improvement over the supplied free HDMI-HDMI cable bundled with the Oppo :)
That's because you approached it with biased eyes!

(or something)

Its digital mate... the signal that's received is either on or off. If the signal makes it down the cable and is received you won't improve upon it ;)

I know it's digital, but copper cable has resistance, its subject to EM interference etcetera. It's not perfect. Not all those little 1s and 0s will make it to the other end of a long run, meaning you have to rely on error checking and correction.

Maybe my 3m statement was a little short. I was going by something Robert Heron on DL.TV said ages ago. He said for short HDMI cables there's really no point spending any more than the minimum, but once you get to longer runs, it starts to make a difference. He's the one with the AV lab, so I suppose he'd know.

^^^^^^^^^^ - Bigpops that is

I was not going to say anything but I just have to :D. As most should already know/understand, the signal recieved will be IDENTICAL on shortish runs regardless of the 'quality' of the cable, bar a physical defect/damage to the lead or the cheap cable has straw for wires ;). Once you get in to long runs then the quality of the metal used/resistance will start to play a part.

As far as I am concerned for anything under 5m you can use any old rubbish and as long as all the pins are working you will get identical results. I made the mistake of buying an expensive cable when I got my first ever HDTV (Optoma RD65). I knew that it would probably not be needed but I relied on my 'anologue' AV experiences and bought it anyway. £100 later I had an Ixos 3m DVI-DVI lead. Plank :D

In my experience of long HDMI/DVI cable runs, you should either be using repeaters or be running them via CAT5 baluns instead. I use the baluns myself and they are brilliant.

Apparently, the scientific way to test audio cables is with blind testing. Not sure how that works with AV cables! Lol!

the correct method is double blind testing and it has nothing to do with wearing a blindfold.

I posted a thread about the subject of whether certain components make a difference a while back, there's a fair bit of info in there.
