Is this the correct FPS in Crysis?

Machine is a E6600 @ 3.4Ghz, 2GB of RAM, and a 4870 at 790/1100.

Running it on all settings 'high' (not very high) in DX9 mode at 1680*1050 and I'm getting 25FPS maximum, slowing down to 15 or so in bigger areas. Is that normal?

You're on Vista? I'd imagine that lack of RAM could be an issue. Vista likes 3 or 4 gigs for gaming.

I'd have thought you'd get higher FPS than that otherwise.

Is definitely low. Now that I know how my 4870 should run. I am currently running all high DX10 with 4xAA and it barely ever drops below 30.

Thats the 32-bit version, with clocks at 790/1000 and Q6600 at 3GHz

Edit: what motherboard do you have?

I only ask because until recently I was using an MSI P35 and performance was a fair bit slower than what it is with my current X38 board.

Really? The reviews seem to show a 1-2% difference between a pci-1 board and a pci-e 2 board using a 4870????

A pretty old one, Abit AW9D-MAX.

Using the 8.7 ATI drivers.

Try unintstalling the drivers and a fresh install again. I had big problems with the 8.7 as Grid would not even load with them so went back to the 8.6 with hotfix.

I am now using the 8.8 betas which seem to have given me a major boost in everything I have tested so far.

3dmark06 up 600 points, vantage up 1000 points, crysis fps up 4fps  (this is on very high dx10 1680 x 1050 benchmark)

I know. It's very odd, but I had done all sorts on that board - clean installs, different drivers, etc. I did not realise it was slower until I put the X38 in and tried the 4870 on that.

Before Crysis was not playable with any AA on DX10, and had to drop shadows to medium at 1680x1050 for it to be playable. Now I run all high at 1680x1050 with 4xAA and it playable.
