Lasers and planes, not big or clever

nevermind anti terror laws hes got zero tolerence robocop to deal with

so at worst community service just like all the other scum round there

I think the 200mW green laser pens have a visible range of 25 miles, it would soon burn the back of your retina at close range.

The problem is that the sellers remove the UV filters which tricks devices measuring the output.

100 mile range supposedly.. but in this country very illegal!

Laser pens

The law

Under the General Product Safety Regulations 1994 products supplied to customers must be safe. Laser products are covered by a British/European Standard which classifies them into groups i.e. 1, 2, 3A, 3B, and 4 according to their power level. Recent tests have shown that laser pointers classed as 3A and 3B could cause injury to the eyes. These laser pointers are considered to be unsuitable for use by the general public.

Seller responsibilities

It is the sellers responsibility to ensure that the laser pointers are labelled including the classification. If there is no classification markings then these lasers must not be sold and you should return them to your supplier. Class 3A and 3B lasers should also be withdrawn from sale and returned, where possible to your supplier.

Some lasers will be marked in Roman numerals i.e. class II, class IIIA etc. It is believed that any lasers marked class II or above could also be unsafe and should therefore be withdrawn from sale and returned to your supplier. Please note that some lasers marked class 1 or class 2 could be unsafe due to the variations in output and should only be supplied to responsible customers. It is also advised that copies of certificates are obtained from your supplier to show that the class 1 or class 2 pointers are in fact safe.

What could happen?

If you sell an unsafe laser pointer you may be prosecuted with a maximum fine of £5000 and/or 6 months imprisonment.

In addition all your stocks will be seized and maybe destroyed.

Please note that this information is for guidance only and is not a full interpretation of the law which only a court of law can give.

If the manufactures installed polarising filters in the cockpit windows then this sort of stuff couldn't happen. People are worried about bombs while something as simple as a laser pen is capable of bringing down a plane!

Whats worrying is, now this story has made headline news.....

All the chavs with 200mW lasers will be going out of their way to shine it at planes, and the ones that don't have lasers will be wanting one for xmas

And the law means nothing...... they are sold in the legal spec with an adjustable pot, or instuctions on how to be increased from 1mW up to 100mW in some cases. So the seller is not breaking the law in any way.

Basically that "law" only says that unsafe lasers should not be sold to the general public. It doesn't quantify any specific rules or limits for the power outputs, purely that some laser pens made by some people can be unsafe. Durr, most things if supplied by a dodgy manufacturer can be unsafe and i'm pretty sure your not allowed to sell them either, dodgy microwaves, tv's etc. Its not just lasers.

wouldn;t the beam onacheap laser disperse quite a bit at that range and be a lot wider than a point?

Not really as the dot pitch is the same for the user. Despite the distance the dot will always appear as the same size for the person pressing the button. At a long distance it will look like a dot to the user but at the surface its hitting it can be several metres wide. The power output for a commercial/ebay laser when at this size is far less than up close, being blinded any more than having a torch shone towards you is highly unlikely.

Stupid yes, and he deserves some form of punishment however, 1 the laser pen is a tiny dot, i am calling BS on it blinding the pilot. what happened to his oter eye? also like how they say blinded in the title when in eality it didnt blind him. if this is the deffinition of being blinded, i get blinded every morning when i wake up when the sun is too bright.

Sensationalist rubbish from the BBC, I await the inevitable ban on laser pens.
