Just got my new lens Canon 70-200L F4 IS USM. It has replaced my old sigma 70-300 f4-5.6 APO.

Below are 4 images, 2 images taken at F5.6 and F8 on each lens at 200mm (on a tripod).

All are 640x480 100% crops from the centre of the image.

See if you can tell which is which !

Image 1 for me, good clolour tone, sharpish image, although the trees behind in number 3 are a little better than in number 1, overall number 1 wins. Number 3 is not good at all, infact i think the tripod moved its that blurrly on my screen.

number 4 is too noisy for me over the red colour and with a soft focus.

So i hope your new lens is image 1 mate..

Image 1 is new lens f5.6
Image 2 is new lens f8 (slightly sharper than image 1 IMO)

Image 3 is old lens f5.6 (v soft)
Image 4 is old lens f8

Well chuffed with it !

What ISO were these taken at? Might just be the noise but i'd expect the centre to be sharper, my F/4L seems sharper in the centre at 100%.

are these 100% crops? If so I'm not impressed at all with any of them :s

That's an F8 100% crop from my 24-105 F4L and by all accounts the 70-200 F4L is meant to be perhaps sharper?

I will try to replicate the sort of shot you are showing. The difficulty at the moment is:

1) It's flipping raining and grey so no decent light anywhere.
2) The lack of any kind of model.

Out of curiosity - what lighting - I can see one flash - were there any other sources of light ?

The photos I took were taken earlier today from and the day is so grey and cloudy that everything looks so flat.

Your shot is very sharp - is that straight from the camera or has there been any PP ?

And My Sigma 70-300 APO is sharper in the center, closer to image 1-2.

The Problem I have with the sigma is that even on Crop anything outside the center 1/3rd box is uselessly soft. That and the slow AF made me buy a 2nd Hand Nikon 80-200 2.8. The cneter sharpness between the 2 is comparable though, once the Sigma is stopped down to f/8 .

Is that sharpened at all? For a 100% crop that's staggeringly sharp!

It looks like moderate USM has been applied but I'm not expert. Looks like a few sharpening artifacts and some areas seem overly sharp for any lens give DoF issues etc.

EDIT: But it is one nicely sharp image from a nice sharp lens, without doubt.
