Tropical Fish

this thread has made me wanna go out and buy some fish again :D when i get paid now i shall go venture into the fishshop* lol

*by fishshop i do mean like wyevale or whatever not the local chippy
;)

with my 190ltr i used to do a 30% water change every week and hardly ever had fatalities, but nowadays i'm far to busy to do it so frequently (usually monthly), as such i've had a few deaths lately :(

just goes to show that water quality means everything and although people say fish are easy to look after they do still take some effort, especially if you have a larger tank or live plants.

neon tetras although small like to swim at speed and venture (and need to be in bigger sholes i.e 10+).

just stick a colourful betta (siamese fighter) in it, much more entertaining to watch than neons :)

info: http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/Fishindx/betta.htm

Do this, I really can't think of much more boring than a few neons. They might be shiny but they're not very nice to look at and don't seem to have much "personality"...

Heres what my tank used to look like yesterday morning....

£125 and 6 hours later it looks like this..

Still abit cloudy from the gravel but the filter will sort that out, I did wash the gravel but can only get it so clean!

Still lacking a couple of plants and pebbles but I didnt want to spend much more yesterday so will do that this weekend I think!

Heres some of my fish..
I have - 3 Plecs (?) only managed get a picture of the smallest one.
1 neon tetra - My ex moved to manchester so I had it off her - really need to get it some mates.
3 other tetras ( not sure of the name)
1 Guarami
2 Blood parrot cichlid - which seemed to be frowned upon but I absolutely love mine, really responsive and do an ace dance when they are hungry and I walk in the room!
1 Convict Cichlid

Angel Fish (4 years Ive had that) with smallest plec in background

Blood parrot cichlid (had them 3 years) which tried to get in on every picture foloowing my camera around the tank!

Best one I could get of my convict cichlid - very shy but only had it yesterday

nice, cichlids will feast off the tetra though :p

love amazon sword, my favourite plants but your plecs will knaw on it as they grow up :(

how long has the tank filter been running, I assume its fully cycled?

Have some very similar pink Zoo's myself :) those are some lovely looking clowns... I see the yellow Goby has moved in with them as well :D

Yeah thats what I thought although the tetra has been in for 2 weeks now, only fish I had yesterday were the Convict and the silver shark.

Hope they wont because that plant was £10 :(
Heres my biggest plec (about 6 inches)

You mean since I put the new gravel in? Not very long because all my fish were sitting in a plastic bin waiting to be put in the tank. I tried to keep asmuch of the old water & bacteria from the old gravel as I could and then just jhoped for the best...they all seem ok so far!

overnight that plec will definately knaw at the plants, sorry :(

silversharks normally need 75 gallon tanks minimum really too as they grow massive (you'll see what i mean if you ever see an adult).

changing the gravel generally has little effect on filtration, it is your filter media that plays the biggest part. How long has the filter been up and running for and how many fish were in the tank before you added the new ones and for how long?

make sure you keep testing the water every day or so after adding new fish using a testing kit for traces of ammonia and nitrite (nitrate is fine though).

:eek: Mines only 30 gallons I think!Its only tiny at the moment though anyway.

Ive had 6 or so fish in for 3 years, 2-3 weeks ago added 2 plecs and some tetra, then yesterday added the convict and the silver shark. Last night I emptied (kept most of the water in buckets etc), put the fish in a plastic bin, changed the gravel, added 3 plants, added an air stone then put all the water and fish back in.

Think that covers your questions?

Just done a test

PH = 6.8
KH = 3'd
GH = >10'd
NO2 = 1 mg/l
NO3 = 100 mg/l

However Ive lost the instruction leaflet so not a clue if thats good or bad :o

Here's my new 90litre planted aquarium. I'm currently cycling it without fish so I've got to wait a few weeks before it's ready for fish. I'm not planning on having anything to exciting in there, neon tetras, dwarf gourami etc. The tanks set-up mainly for plants. The CO2 unit and laterite in the sand should give the plants a start.

nice tanks guys :)

currently setting up a 60L Rena tank, just waiting on a filter to arrive (from ebay) then can start a fishless cycle, so early days for me yet.

got the ammonia ready and the api test kit.

my tank is nothing fancy i just want a few simple fish to start with, want to get my 2.5 year old son interested in this aswell.

Ive got a question about my tank, ive recently got a water testing kit and tested my water and it comes out saying my water is poor quailty and i should raise the PH level, what is the best way and cheapest of doing this?

Here are a couple pics of my tank its a 60 litre:
