Hi there,

I'm getting my first car in the next month or so. I've got around 3k (maybe a bit more) and around £1500 for insurance. I've been given a £1350 quote on a £3,000 1.8 Golf GTI, which seems pretty good.

Anyone got any recommendations?

I take it you are in the market for a hot hach as you are looking at a golf GTI. Hot hatches are difficult to buy used as they tend to attract owners who drive the car hard. But thats not to say you cant bag a bargain.

My choice would be the Proton Satria GTI. You should get a very tidy example for that money providing you can live with the badge. Saxo VTS is popular but beware of abused examples with bad boy exhausts etc. Ford puma is a good choice but watch out for rust. MG ZR 1.8 is another bagain. Loads of choice out there for that money to be honest

Mitsubish i old skool colt, it's a beast of a car

;)

Or a mondeo, focus, 5-series..... No wait I'm really helpful.

Il recommend a focus to prevent being strung up :D

Has anyone got any specific advice about buying this sort of Golf? My budget is £4k, and I've seen I can get pretty decent 1.4s with 55,000 on the clock from AutoTrader.

yeah, don't buy a 1.4 at all, let alone for 4k, it will be the worst money you ever spent.

as boring as it sounds

VW offer very poor value for money on used cars. They hold their value very well, meaning you pay over the odds for a car that really isnt all that new or well specified.

something like this makes a much better second hand buy

I need to keep an eye on insurance though, and £900 is a decent quote. I know BMWs etc can be had for this sort of money but they will all be killer to insure.

I'm not a fan of focus' tbh. If I was going to keep the car for 2-3 years then move on wouldn't it make sense to buy something which holds it value?

at 3k

cars like the focus have already done the bulk of their depreciation. And the golf will still depreciate, its just going to be an older car for the money.
