Cycling speed?

My average speed to work - 18 miles (route profile below) is :

To Work : 18.3 mph (left to right)
From work : 16.8mph (right to left)

On a full suspension XC MTB (weight : 30lbs) fitted with 1.75" road tyres.

agree with the 30mph my @ss comments.

I think 18mph is a good fast out of breath speed for that distance. Maybe 20ish if you push it.

I ride alone most of the time and I can manage somewhere over 20mph on rides of 30-45 miles and then my speed starts to tail off. 30mph for 90 miles, even with the prevailing tail wind on that route, does seem a trifle high to me. If you are doing that, even as part of a group, then you are very fit and should possibly consider a career change in time for 2012?

I manage 20mph for around 10 miles then I really get tired. Then again, I have really just started with the road biking.

I am trying to figure out a balanced diet and a decent fitness regime. What do you guys recommend? :)

I don't go very far, but when i do i go very fast :D

On a flat road with no need for stopping i can do 35mph on a road bike. On my jump bike i reckon i average about 18-22mph and on my trials bike i reckon its around 8-10mph ha ha! Its easily the most fun bike of them all though ;)

Nothing quite like jumping up onto a wall to avoid traffic/pedestrians then trying to casually land smoothly over the other side after realising the drop is far bigger than you thought :p

From someone who is very into biking i'd like to throw a massive LOL out to the 30mph average guy.

30mph average, unless it down hill all they way yeah but even on flat road that is some serious going.

I live in a village that is on a hill so its easy going away from home but a **** coming home.

I did a 60 mike bike ride and it took me 4 hours 40 mins and that was on a mtb with semi slick tyres on hilly terrain, A guy did 100 miles in 3 hours 40mins.

The thing is he's going Oxford to cambridge which would imply a head wind and not a tail wind and makes the feat even more impressive/unbelievable.

My commute is Guildford to Wimbledon and I average 17 - 18 mph on the way in (I usually have a slight tailwind) and around 15mph on the way back (slight head wind). That's on a hard tail with slicks.
The tyres seemed to be good for around 2 mph.

I have just come back from a jaunt on my Nan’s shopper, only 3 gears but averaged 38.3 mph over a very hilly 50 miles with a prevailing head wind!

I reckon the tyres cost me around 2.35 mph and the shopping basket a further 1.78 mph, sigh! :(

Watch out, 2012 here I come........

:D
