He's flying a depowerable kite with harness, you can't just let go as the kite is attached to the harness. Letting go would just let the bar out reducing power somewhat but leaving no control. He has a safety he could have pulled to take the power out of the kite and put it on the brakes but not much use or time to pull it in this situation. There comes a point when it is too windy. As the wind was so high he would have been flying a relatively small kite and these take you up fast but bring you down fast too. Ouch
