Frantic phonecall from Mrs N this morning "I've broken down". She's on her way to her mum's with the munchkin in the back and the engine has died. She said the glow-plug warning light came on & then it cut out. I got her to try it and it started & ran ok. Five minutes later she calls again and it's done the same thing, started again fine & she managed to get to her mum's without further incident.

This is now troubling me as it seems odd that the only warning light to come on is for the glow-plugs, which shouldn't be in use when its running anyway. I had a quick poke about on t'internet and it looks like its a faulty cam sensor - £20 part and a 10min fix. However, to be sure that's the fault I'd need the ECU reading but that's going to cost me £££ at the (frankly useless & untrustworthy) dealer.

So my question is thus: does anyone know of someone who could come out & read the ECU or should my local garage be able to do it? I just want confirmation of the fault as I'm happy to fix it myself.

Thanks

any indy mechanic will have an obd2 reader, infact a lot of people on here (including myself) even have them

That light also represents engine control faults, not just the glow plugs.

There are cheap obd2 16 pin readers going around for £30, if you want the proper ford kit you will need to become a ford franchise and fork out £6000.

And join the AA - then she wont have to call you in the middle of the day :-)
