2 x 3870x2's to a 4870x2 is it worth it?

Hey up,

Right im ready to click buy, but being at work canna really read around at the moment.

I game at 2560x1600 on my 30" dell.

Will i see a decent improvement going from 2 x 3870x2's to a single 4870x2?

Probably not.

I noticed a huge difference going from a single 3870X2 to a 4870X2, and I play on a 30" Dell in 2560x1600.

That's not to say that the 3870X2 was a slouch, but the 4870X2 really stretches its legs in those kinds of resolutions. That said I'm only getting about 40fps in Crysis at 2560x1600 (DX10, High) - I'm not a Crysis man so I don't know whether that's good or bad.

There's also the monetary aspect - I bought my 3870X2 back in late January for £249.99+VAT, now I'll be lucky to get over £100 for it judging by going rates. If I had two of them I don't think I would've been happy to write off the depreciation for what is probably not going to be a huge difference.
 
keep the 3870's until the next gen cards tbh.

nothing needs more than that really.

Any other views guys?

Gaming at 2560x1600 would i see any improvement going from 2 x 3870x2's to a single 4870x2?

Will the extra mem 1gb per gpu over 512mb per gpu make any difference?

Yes the 1GB per gpu will.

Im on 3x3870 on 30" sam 2560x1600 & its painful at times.

If i do go 4870X2 it will 2 of them as i don't want to just scrape through.

A single 4870 is faster than a 3870x2 so a 4870x2 will be a lot faster than 2 3870x2's especially if you use AA/AF at that res.
 
I plan to add a second to it in a couple of months time.

Missus wont let me at the moment lol. Pah she said things wouldnt change when we got married :( lol :p

As long as i can get home, get it installed and the side back on the box she will never know. :D lol.

Thats why i never change my case, i learnt this lesson a while back even before we got married ;) :p

Good move with the case and delivery to your work but what about after a bottle of Jack Daniels?. Will you be able to hold your tongue then?. :D

I reckon we all do it, I have many times, put the new Corsair in, she never noticed, then one day she found the box in the loft, I had to think fast and say it was for a client and had chucked the box in the loft.
