Another NEW Playstation 3 announced this afternoon (160GB model).

Didn't Sony moan at Ms for having too many SKU's?

They moaned because the two xbox SKU's are basically completely different products; developers can't make games use the HDD because loads of the userbase don't even have an HDD.

Wheras the different PS3's don't change anything as major.

I just find it funny Sony knew they where going to lose billions with getting Blu Ray in the PS3 but scrimp and save over BC.

i think its fairly obvious that ps2 games will eventually come to psn. And people are saying 2 ps3 with the exact same features but with different harddrive sizes is confusing? I might understand if one had bc and one didnt etc but its not so where is the hate coming from. Its just better value and more appropriate as they release more and more hdd intensive services

Removing the PS2 GPU was all about reducing costs, lowering prices thus increasing sales and in turn to make a profit. This is exactly what it has done, think PS3 sales are up something like 97% from last year and the Games Division has made profit in 2 of the last 3 quarters. If my 60Gb stopped playing PS2 games would i be bothered? not one little bit, i played three PS2 games on it at launch but not played one since last year. The reason you buy a PS3 is not to play PS2 games is it? if its such an issue keep your PS2 :)
In the end this is all about HDD size not functionality, you still got the 80Gb PS3 for £299 and this for about £350-400. Even though the HDD is easily upgradable, for the general consumer its probably something they would never do so it looks a good deal.

Actually, the games I've played most on my PS3 are God of War 2 and FFXII

I don't see why having 2 models with different HD sizes is confusing, they both do exactly the same thing, just one has more storage?

With the 360 it was a little different, for BC on the 360 didn't you need a HD and also downloading demos etc require one. Certain games require one for replays etc.

It's a little bit daft but not confusing.

Any members of the general public who are confused by this shouldn't be allowed near anything electrical anyway.

Slightly off topic, but what happens if you just plug in an external usb hard drive to a PS3?
It works, but you can't save gamedata to an external drive, you cannot change/add folders and you cannot organize files and folders.

I had an external 160GB drive for a while but have ordered a 320GB replacement drive yesterday which I will replace with the original 60GB drive.

I'd guess it's the mouse pointer feature that's forcing them to put it at the top of the pad, would very awkward to hold and use as a pointer at the same time if the keys sat at the bottom of the pad.

True, but it's also a LOT easier to type on because your thumbs are already there. Hold your 360 controller and try typing with your thumbs below the controller, it's very easy. Now try typing above the controller, it's impossible.

I think we should all wait until we've held the thing before deciding that it's unusable and ergonomically terrible.
Personally, I think it looks alright and will probably be grabbing one when they come out (depending on price).

Yup, after the horror of my DS3 accident I have a plan to run a usb cable from the ps3 to the wall next to where I sit and mount a powered hub there for charging the controllers and keyboard / mouse.

Wow, Sony really do suck at ergonomics.

Seriously, it would be far better to have the keyboard at the bottom of the controller so your thumbs are able to change between analog sticks and the keypad quicker/more comfortably.

Yep.. All you need is a small keypad similar to the same size of the blackberry curve keypad in between the holders of the pad.

The changes in the xbox models are much larger and affect they way you program, no hard drive vs hard drive matters unlike, small hard drive vs big hard drive, it is simply extra storage, hard drive prices fluctuate, sony are simply putting the best option in at the time. i agree no BC and memory card slots aint good but are a seperate issue.

They should have released the 80 gig then the 160 gig should have reinstated the memory card slots and the backwards compatability for the many people who want it, whenever I mention PS3 the first thing they ask is if they can play the ps2 games on it, sad having to tell them to hunt down a 60 gig model all the time.
