Hi all,

I have a fairly complicated money situation regarding how I am paid a salary (which is in dollars), and I want to get the best advice on how to handle receipt the salary.

Do people go to accountants to discuss this kind of thing?

I have found the my average bank branch doesn't have the expertise to advise me on how best to maximise my earnings which are in dollars (i.e. it may be the case that I am advised to save some in dollars and play waiting games and change when the exchange rates best suit - whatever it is, I want to know).

What kind of things does s/he sort out for you? Advice, bank accounts/pension, tax returns?

As I mentioned above I have one in Russia just do deal with my tax affairs in Moscow (general tax returns but being Moscow it's complicated!). The second one just does general tax advice and returns from a UK perspective. The third I use for specialist off-shore/expat advice.

Though they can help me with banking/currency advice I only use them a bit for that. Being paid in sterling creates interesting issues for getting good values with currency given my locations. Though my bank in Jersey are helpful to a degree I have to say I still do lose out some of the time.

I have an accountant who prepares and files my tax returns, advises on structures and ways of saving money within the rules. Invaluable, unless of course that value is around £1,500 a year, which it is.

If you own a business or work as a loan consultant it would be wise to have an accountant. They will advise you in the areas you are interested in, most firms will have specialists in tax and accounting which cover what you are wanting to know.
