Hi bit of a noobs question but is there any disadvantage in buying 2 separate 1gb sticks of ram instead of a kit on some sites I've seen 1gb less than half the price of the equivalent 2gb kit. Cheers.

1x2GB or 2x1GB wont really make any difference, but bear in mind you'll have more ram slots free with 1x2GB. Future planning :D

Cheers for the prompt replies. Am I right in thinking 3 x 1gb is detrimental to performance im now debating whether to go up to 4gb ram on xp but that will only register as 3.5gb yeah? Too many options

if you've already got 2 x 1GB sticks does it matter whether you then buy say 2 x 2gb sticks on top of that as an upgrade? and is it better for them to be the same ram as the original?

cheers (sry for slightly hijacking the thread with my questions)

But then you've no guarantee that the two sticks will run together.

For the benefit of other noobs like me, this statement answers the original question. Sticks sold in kits have been tested to work together. I agree that you shouldn't have to do this blah blah blah but you do, it is an unfortunate issue and imo worth the peace of mind.

How will having 4 sticks of 1 gig perform?

cheers (sry for slightly hijacking the thread with my questions)

could anyone help me with this?
