Well, i've bought a new car (audi A3 Sportback 2.0T FSi) pics when i pick it up on Monday :D, and it doesn't have HiD's as standard, seen kits on ebay for about £60, are they the real deal because it seems really cheap for a whole kit.

To do it properly you'll need projector lens lights else the beam pattern will be all over the place, also to be 100% legal I think you need auto levelling motors and washers too.

There's a link off the DVLA website specifically about HIDs if you search aboot for it.

HTH

Despite people over and over saying "It's a grey area" and "Aftermarket solutions don't require this, that and the other" the following link:

http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roadsafety/drs/hidheadlamps

Would indicate that basically if they aren't fitted at the time of manufacturer then anything you add will not be road legal.

There will be plenty of people here to tell you they have fitted similar and have never had a single problem.
You too would probably be fine.
But if you weren't and you couldn't get an MOT for the vehicle...

That doesn't look like a very well thought out document.

The reason for this is that the existing lens and reflector are designed around a Halogen filament bulb, working to very precise tolerances.

This is entirely true but many cars now have projector not reflector headlights which are in most cases the same as those fitted with HID's in models which have them from the factory.

Is there anything more chav than the now common sight of a 1997 Ford Escort with Xenons?

Thats a crazy thing to say... it's 'just' a headlight and you don't need to be in a BMW to have HIDs any more, they just a tool to see better at night, plus a lot of peeps think they look better. (I think they look great!)

There is nothing great about a car with reflector headlights fitted with HID's scattering beams of light everywhere but where they are supposed to be. It is illegal and dangerous. They look totally crap on cars where it is blatantly obvious that Barny Bodger has fitted a 10 quid ebay special to his car.

They should only be fitted if you have projector lights. Not reflectors.

I agree they shouldn't be on reflector based lights, but fitted to a projector unit they look good on any car... and do a dam good job

Why? You've spent thousands on a decent car. Why ruin it with cheap crap from China? Get a decent HID kit from a reputable UK supplier.

Original headlights are pants and these got fantastic reviews. I wouldn't normally buy cheap but these will hopefully be sufficient :)

Because they have been recommended, and if there cheap maybe its worth a punt.

Compaired to the good stuff they are pants, light output test on these cheap kits is poorer as is ballast failure rates, i've seen a cheap kit alongside my expensive ones and the difference whilst not huge is a valid one.

Don't listen to [TW]Fox. Some people just can't except that cheap HID kits off of ebay are any good. They supposedly have to cost X number of pounds and be fitted in custom projector housing so as not to blind other drivers with their dazzle and "poor" beam cut off pattern. I don't know if it's pure snobbery not being able to except it's a major improvment over stock for little cash or what, but I would just say do it as evidently a lot of people run with custom/aftermarket HID kits for cheap, and have no problems with MOTs and day to day use. The light improvement is massive and thats the bottom line. I can't say I have ever been "blinded" or dazzled by a car with a HID kit. In fact, if anything I would say cars WITH projector lenses and OEM fitted HIDs are more distracting from a distance with their more intense focused beam.

Ah so you are one of those who drives around with a cheapo HID kit in a reflector lense? No wonder you felt the need to get defensive.

Hopefully you'll get pulled and fined or fail your MOT or something before you blind too many other road users with your Chinese junk.
