Megadeth vs Metallica

I'm not quite sure how you managed to miss my point, so I'll make it easier.

You have slated Megadeth because they have a poor lead singer. In the same post you then claim Slayer to be the best band, despite them having a poor lead singer.
 
But at least Slayers lead singer doesn't sound like Beavis in hysteria fit. :)
 
I much prefer those jungle-tones of Sepultura at the moment.

Although, with the OP's debate - I simply prefer Metallica as I enjoy the more melodic songs and Hetfield's Vocals :)
 
Metallica hands down. I don't really listen to metal often now, but when I do it would far more likely be Master Of Puppets, the Black Album or And Justice For All.

They are still also the best ive act I have seen, beating Radiohead, Coldplay, Paul McCartney, Roger Waters, Slayer and many more. This is despite having only seen them once when I was 14 at Monsters Of Rock 95. I go to 3 festivals a year and tonnes of gigs, nothing has beat the start of One were they recreated the intro war gunfire (album perfect to my ears) using fireworks. Wicked!

Tom Araya isn't a singer but his voice suits the music (and he is in tune).
Mustaine tries to sing but he's got an awful whining nasally voice that ruins Megadeth for me.
I'd like to hear them fronted by somebody like Joey Belladonna.
 
I'm sure most people will prefer Metallica, but I like Megadeth more because their sound is more quirky and unusual (Friedman's guitar licks and Mustaine's unique voice), Metallica tend to sound too clichéd I guess for me (although they made it clichéd :p)
 
The partnership of Mustaine, Friedman, Ellefson and Menza created in my opinion the best thrash metal sound ever. Ok Mustaines vocals arent as deep as Hetfields, but its unique and definitely not weak. I respect Mustaine as well for throwing Megadeth right in the face of Metallica and winning fans. When it comes down to it, that early 90's period (Rust in Peace and Countdown to Extinction particularly) was simply awesome. I still rate Friedman as one of my all time favourites. Tornado of Souls is a perfect example :)

Metallica is my favorite band but i would have to say stuff like Anthrax was pretty decent stuff as a kid and it was Metallica/Anthrax/Sabbath that got me into Rock/Metal.

Never really liked Megadeath always thought of them as a bit pathetic for some reason, just dont like their sound.
 
Tough choice really, I always thought they were much of a muchness to be honest, I would say Metallica have the edge though due to much better album consistency and a better lead singer.

However, I would choose Judas Priest anyday (except those awful albums they did with Tim 'Ripper' Owens, Demolition and Jugulator iirc, yuk) ...the very best albums they did (for me at least) were Sad Wings of Destiny in 1976 and the latest album, Nostradamus. I have been so impressed with that, it's a fantastic album, really, really good and much more appealing to my tastes, with it's slower more complex and even symphonic presentation. I enjoyed the Pain Killer and Ram it on Down era a lot, that was pretty well the definition of 'heavy metal' for me, but I always liked Sad Wings of Destiny better and now Nostradamus has rekindled that genius for me. Sorry for going a bit off topic there, I know the thread wasn't about Judas Priest :p

I'm a massive Priest fan and got to see them from Rock Rolla onwards but the new album is just awful.
It is not Judas Priest.
Rob Halford is probably one of the only vocalists I've heard who could always deliver the goods (see what I did there?) time and time again unlike other vocalists of the day.

I admit it's different, and usually I'm not a fan of bands changing their sound, but in this case I think it came out really well. Maybe because I'm a huge fan of some of the more complex and symphonic metal styles such as Stratovarius, Rhapsody of Fire, Sirenia, Tristania etc, and I'm a big 'Doom metal' fan aka Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus and of course much of Black Sabbath's stuff. Judas Priest manage to combine many of these elements and Halford's excellent voice just makes Nostradamus one of the best albums released in the last few years to me. I also like the theme of the album. I'm sorry you don't like it, I guess it was bound to cause a great deal of controversy with Priest's typical fan base.

Perhaps thats whats wrong with it for me.
Priest were innovators even though in the early days they were compared to a cross between Zep, Sabbath & Queen.
Whan Painkiller came out it was obvious they were moving with the times.
They got a young drummer and KK & Glen went back to school to learn guitar and went to that famous place where vai & Satriani taught.
With Ripper Owens they did a bad job of moving direction again which the bands they were copying do so well.
Nostradamus is another move that I think is worse than that one.
BTW, I thought Ripper Owens was a fantastic vocalist but talk about having no presence on stage.
 
Judas Priest isnt really thrash metal though so you cant compare Megadeth and Metallica to them.....then again Metallica arent really thrash anymore.

Perhaps not but they certainly did tunes at least 15 years before the genre that could be classed has thrash if Anthrax had got hold of them.
 
Personally, i think Metallica's songs are actually better (although there are very few post black album that are good), but Rust In Peace is a brilliant album, so is Peace Sells. Certainly Megadeth edge out metallica guitar wise on most albums. Megadeth have released their fair share of rubbish too unfortunately (Risk/Cryptic Witterings). I think if you wanted to describe metal music using songs to a non metal listener, Metallica's Creeping Death has it all - thrash riffs, epic solo, a breakdown, gang vocals - a master work of a song!

No one has mentioned testament yet either...
 
I must admit i prefer their newer (well, now ex singer) singer to Joey Belladonna - i guess i couldnt be considered a proper anthrax fan! I think its a shame they split with John Bush. I havent heard anything by the new new guy...

They released an album with the new guy singing the old stuff and it is excellent.
