Spec me a new car - Diesel and quick please

I'm after a new car, and can budget around £3k, maybe a bit more if needed.

It's gotta be diesel, and capable of 50MPG if possible (obviously when driving nicely) but I'd like something with a bit of poke when needed too.

No smaller than Astra / Focus size please, and reliable and capable of making it into the 100k plus miles range.

I can't think of a single quick diesel for £3k - this isn't enough for the first of the properly fast diesels.

Get a petrol instead. Diesel fuel is more expensive anyway.

Are there any decent Vectra diesels out there? I know they do a 150 but don't think I could pick one up for 3k.

Nope, Vauxhall didn't make a single decent Vectra Diesel unfortunately

1999 - GT TDI but its only going to be the 115bhp version and around 100k.

Its really not worth it.

They're going to be slow and more expensive to run than a nice Focus petrol or similar

I once drove a Rover 220SDi... jesus that thing was quick.

It had been modded to hell, but still. I just wouldn't want something that old... it was P Reg.

In all seriousness though, do you really need a diesel? As if you do - you are severely restricted to what you can buy that is 'quick'. Restricted in that, the best you're looking at would be something with a VAG PD130 TDI lump - which is not really quick.

I guess thats what my mate's X reg Passat has - that's a 130. And it is pretty quick tbh - feels it anyway.
