Dropping a work colleague off in Walsall town centre I was driving along normally when a gap opened up. I put my foot down in first to speed up and the next thing I know my foot is off the pedal yet I am still shooting forwards! I take it out of 1st into neutral and the engine is banging off of the limiter, slam my foot on the accelerator pedal and the revs dropped.

I pulled into my works carpark (was literally 5 seconds away) and took a look to find out what the hell just happened. Turns out my mat's have been creaping forwards (no idea how as they are secured in!) and the mat is over the accelerator pedal. Looks like I will be re-securing them down again this afternoon!

What made it worse was everyone and I mean EVERYONE turned around to look at me Just as I was leaving the carpark I noticed an old lady on her mobile and it looked like she was writing down my registration, I guess she was going to report me

My work colleague did make a comment about how he loves how quick it was

Just a shame I looked like a complete idiot :(

Happened to me once. Left a roundabout joining a dual carriageway, stuck my foot down, reached cruising speed and lifted. Pedal didn't come back up - still accelerating. One of those moments where you feel the heat rising in your face. Managed to pop it back up with the side of my foot though. The edge of the carpet just jammed in the hole and held it.

this used to happen all the time when the mats were new in my mazda 3 its kinda pant filling especially if your not that far away from the car infront

how can you not notice the mat is over the pedal?

Sorry it is so small, I haven't got my data cable so I have had to use my old work phone. That is basically what happened :(

I've had similar.

The dog had a ball in her mouth on the seat behind me. 5 minutes later I'm coming up the a roundabout and try pushing the brake, only for it not to budge at all.

Fortunately I was braking early and had time to kick the soddin ball out from behind the pedal before anything got out of hand.

could have been pretty disasterous.

At least it wasnt a grapefruit :D

had similar happen with the clutch on mine, my old mats were semi rigid plastic and had ridges cut into them. i pressed the clutch and it caught on a ridge and didn't come back up. queue lots of me swearing at the car thinking the clutch cable had snapped!

Dunno about that, had a older square shape polo run away around 1999 on the motorway, throttle opened up wide. Caught on early and got it off to the hard shoulder without event. Not a mechanic by any means but was told the spring went, but if the cable snapped it would've closed.

had this happen on an old V8 range rover I owned, cable snapped and stuck open approaching a roundabout. Just turned the engine off and coasted onto a verge.

Exactly, if the cable snaps it's as if you've taken your foot off the accelerator, it won't open the throttle.
