Spec me a new car - Diesel and quick please

Okay then, without someone biting my head off, someone spec me a decent, midsized petrol car?

And the reason I'm thinking of swapping mine is purely because it's 12 years old, that's all.

:)

Any previous generation "typical" hatchback (bar the top end sportier, flagship stuff) should fit into that category just fine.

its up to him if he wants a diesel, just because you dont do a lot of miles doesnt mean you cant buy a derv, i only do 5000miles but id never go back to petrol now. Id say VW pasatt, Bora, mondeo, go for the 130BHP or more models as the 100BHP ones will be rubbish. autotrader has afew on for about £3000-3500

Yes but when the savings are so low and you end up with a worse older car, only a moron would buy the derv.

My dad had (it is now my brothers) a VW Bora 1.9TDI
On the few occasions I've driven it I was impressed - nice build quality.
My dad was always amazed by the MPG he used to get out of it.

I don't mind if people prefer a diesel, of course they're entitled to like what they want. But a quick diesel for 3k isn't going to happen, it's more like "What diesel can I get for 3k that's not as quick as a 2ltr petrol" :p

i just prefer the diesel engine over the petrol, i know i dont do the mileage but its my choice :) . yeh no diesel car is going to be quicker than the same petrol model for 3K

But it WILL be costing you more to run than an equivalent petrol (at least with current prices), and given that he started the thread stating he wants HIGH MPG, then he is under the delusion that the diesel will be cheaper to run. It won't be.

This is all we are trying to get across.

Well, in an attempt to give you exactly what you're looking for instead of beating you with a stick into petrol submission...

This looks pretty much exactly what you're after.

Its 'quick' according to the standards you're hoping for, only 4 years old, low mileage (although probably due a belt change). Half leathers , aircon, etc. Perfect. Plus with a set of OEM alloys could look quite tidy.

well im not spending as much at the pumps per month as i was a few months ago with my old car. and im getting a lot more mileage out of a tank so im happy, when thinking im probably doing abit more than 5000miles at the moment but no where near the 25k you guys say. OP asked for high mpg but he didnt say anything about saving money :) id look at the VW's if it was my money

Why?

Not looking to start an argument, just wondering what benefits you see in it?

If I was looking at a lowish end BMW (new), i.e. 1 series or 3 series, I'd choose the x20d, 123d everytime over the x20i and x25i. Just for the power delivery which is fantastic at any angle. However 3l straight six is a different matter I havent driven the diesel version or the petrol version so havent much of an opinion on those.

Thats an example of a situation where I would buy a diesel over petrol. As you can tell I'm not bothered about fuel costs/tax etc as I know the diesel versions cost way more in the first place. And I only do about 10,000 miles. But these are probably the only diesel engines I would choose over their equivalents. (come on!!! they can get 174bhp and 350NM torks from the 2l!!!!)
