Audi A3 HiD kit?

Audi-Sport for advice, very good forum for A3s especially.

If you are not experienced in fitting lights then I would pay for a professional to do it, check out VWCruise. They are pricey for lights but from what I hear VAG drivers have nothing but praise for them.

If they are anything like the lights in my A4, a bloke walking in front of you holding a lantern is a better option than the standard lights.

They aren't that bad.

You can see well with them but once you see how good the Xenons are you would prefer them over standard.

They are worse than the average halogen headlight on most cars and pretty snocking for a modern vehicle of the price.

Your A3 will not have projector lenses its only with Xenons that you get them.

Not true, my ancient Fiat Coupe has projectors for dipped beam with halogen bulbs. Likewise it's possible to put HIDs in a reflector style lamp if the reflector is designed properly, and it's preferable as projector headlamps are horribly inefficient.

I think he was talking about the A3.

Might have to investigate the cost of fitting a Xenon kit to my A4. Meant to look into it before and totally forgot about it.

Projectors is an old wifes tale. Its not the case as ive said so many times before XC90's, Accords, Skylines to name a few do not use a projector in their factory HID setups. But I agree the sentiments that aftermarket HIDS are a big no no if it is not standard factory spec because yes in most cases light scatter is an issue

The newer version now uses a projector though

The best way to get Xenons on your A3 is to source a set of factory Xenons and retro fit them. After a quick search the last 2nd hand set went for £310 on ebay with all the bulb/ballasts/ignitors which isn't too bad.

You will need wiring adaptors from here

If you are feeling flush the full auto leveling system and headlight washing system is also available from the above site. (Although total cost will still be around the factory option price) Once you have fitted the Xenons you need someone with vagcom to enable xenon control and disable the bulb warning. Audi/VW/Seat/Skoda forums usually have members willing to do the vagcoming free.

missed this post, thanks very much and just what i wanted to know :)

Are the original lights really that bad?

I don't know what they are like yet, i've not even picked my car up yet lol. The A4 i was looking at had xenons and i always fancied xenons, but when push came to shove, the kit i got in my A3 far outweighed the xenons on the A4 :D

yer because the reflector lense has been designed to take the hid bulb so works fine with no glare

No it's not - but it's easier to say 'you must have projectors' because in terms of retrofitting, this is 100% true.

Its not the case as ive said so many times before XC90's, Accords, Skylines to name a few do not use a projector in their factory HID setups.

But they have modified, specially designed reflector setups which counteract any beam scatter. A halogen fitted car WONT have these, so for all intents and purposes this is irrelevent - if you want to retrofit Xenons you need projectors, if you've got suitable reflectors you will also already have Xenons from the factory, making this irrelevent.
