will there be any issues with having a 8400 and a 4870 on the same MB.

especially issues including drivers

or will a 2nd ATI card be a much better choice.

this is to run a 3rd monitor. 17" TFT

OS is XP X64

The motherboard will never support that.

SLI = nvidia

Crossfire = ATI

motherboards will support one or the other. I.E: my maximus forumla is a x38 chipset so will only crossfire ATi cards, but can also run a single nvidia card

on the other hand, you can have a 7xx series nforce motherboard (and P-series?few too many beers :D) and that will run two nvidia cards in SLI and a singlle ATI card

Regards to the 8400 you will not have any issues, as long as the motherboard supports the type of socket (pins on the cpu/motherboard)

Dont know about the third monitor though

Give it a go and find out? Only way to find out :)

@ PaulyD, i don't think he was intending to crossfire/sli them :p

It'll be fine to run a third monitor.

Why are people automatically assuming the OP means Crossfire or SLI?

Although I don't run the cards in question, I have a 3870 and a 7600GT in my machine (both with latest drivers) and I've honestly had ZERO issues doing this! XP though - doesn't Vista have some beef with mixed video cards?

Why not just buy another cheap ATI card? Saves any conflicts.

because i wasnt intending on buying one since i thought i could borrow it off a friend since he had a pcie card free, but instead hes going to offer a x800 to me. to be fair, he is borrowing my x1900 and x1950 :o
