Anyone done or going to Prison Service Recruitment Day?

I'm dying to get in but I'm currently sat on the waiting list as it were. Down for Northallerton but I'm trying to see if I can get in somewhere else a bit quicker. They don't seem to rush this! I completed my fitness test about 5-6 weeks ago now and I've since heard nothing apart from saying I'm on the list and I passed it all. Guess it's just the agonising wait now. Do they all call you boss then? lol Reminds me of prison break which I have just started watching! Excellent show!
Yep they all call you boss, supprised me a bit aswell:)and prison break is an awsome show,i think i must have been lucky because i had the job offer before i did the fitness test.
oh I though POELTS were the tea boy haha, anyway I work at HMP Send its a closed female trainer, its good fun to be honest but female prisoners are worst than YOs. They just dont take no for an answer.

To all those waiting - The prison service is a good career but does take a while to get in cos they are so slow when it comes to admin.

Yeah i imagine female prisoners are a right nightmare:eek:

I did have one inmate try to grill me about my personal life

I don't have to tell you this but make up a totally new life.
You've done your induction on conditioning and you'll be surprised how they are all Derren Browns when it comes to getting info out of you.
My 3.5 months were a bit hard because one female teacher had decided to tell the lads that I worked in Quality Audit at Jaguar and I know nothing about cars.
Every lesson I had them asking me questions about Jaguars and I had to BS my way through.

I know someone who works in a prison, teaching gardening to the in mates.
Seems like its a bit of a 'dead end' job, though he likes it which is the main thing.
I think hes on about £17k, next jump is 'senior' on about £22k. /End.

:-/

Can I ask you what your shift patterns are like mate? Do you get many/any weekends off? cheers!
Unfortunatly i couldn't tell you mate,i'm still on the training so i'm doing 8-5 at the moment,i haven't looked at the shifts as they are changing in september so thought it was pointless,i haven't got bank holiday monday off though.

Yeah we've looked at conditioning and i'm having none of it,i don't intend on giving anyone any infomation about me what so ever.

I would imagine that having a better rapport with the inmates will be much more benificial to you.

Yeah i agree that having a good rapport is very important, alienating the prisoners in my opinion is a huge mistake, but i think making your personal info like home address, the fact you have a wife and kids etc known is also a mistake.

Major difference between good rapport and conditioning.
You make up a secret life - divorced, no kids, live in a different place, drive a different car etc.
This was very hard for me because I'm no good at telling lies but very important in a prison.
Our Oscar One told us a story about a prisoner who conditioned him over several years.
On his release he actually took him to his digs and when he was inside he killed a bloke came out and said you'd better take me back
Could be just a story to make us think.

Hey, just to say I moved myself off the Northallerton list (Yorkshire) onto the Homehouse (Stockton) list a month ago now and I'm 5th on the list however the North East haven't started recruiting yet so I'm still sat waiting and the lady I deal with is completely useless in my opinion. How you getting on homi? What are your shift patterns? Enjoying the job? Don't suppose you know if each prison has a HR department that I could contact rather than using this useless recruitment lady to contact as she hardly ever gives me any decent info! Cheers!

Thanks mate do keep me posted! Oh and did you get allocated shifts? Glad you're enjoying it mate! :)

I applied for some Psychological assistant roles and my application got flat out refused. The job only requires you have like 5 GCSE's and is really an entry level role paying around 15k.

I've got a Psychology degree and filled out the application forms with all the competancies very well I thought, but i've had not joy out of 3 places now. I don't understand what they are looking for when I exceed the academic requirements and in my opinion illustrate good examples for the competancies.

Competition can't be that high. I'd apply for the forensic psychologist in training roles which are more geared for graduates, but they all state you need experience of working as a psych assistant. Its like going round in circles.

Your qualifications are probably too high for what they want

Yeah i've been given my shifts for the next 20 weeks,i'm doing extra hours at the moment though because we're pretty short staffed, you can double up your shifts or swap with you're work mates,so it's fairly flexible.
Don't mind doing the extra hours though, gives me chance to build up some toil,i'm hoping the xmas pattern will change though, down for xmas day and new year at the moment:rolleyes:
