I have a new toy...now with pictures.

Woooo its a Nikon 600/4 AFS II! I was telling my friend I was toying with the idea of getting the Sigma 500 f4.5 and he said if I wanted, I could buy his 600/4 from him when he upgrades to the new VR version. He said it could be a way off yet as nowhere has them in stock, then 2 days later Grays call him to say they have one VR in stock and does he want it!

We picked it up yesterday and that in return meant I could have his old one straight away! So for a couple of hundred pounds more than the Sigma I got this, complete with lens coat and custom lens foot (not shown).

Tis a beast, check it out next to the 200-400 and 70-200 (50" Panny plasma backdrop for scale, excuse the dust lol). The hood has a two stage thing so you don't have to have it extended fully, I've shown it here at maximum though for full effect.

Check out the 'monopod foot' that comes with it, its about the size of the 70-200 foot..!!

Was going to pick up a Lowepro Lens Trekker but they no longer sell them as a new version is out 'at some point'. Luckily I managed to find someone selling a similar bag in as new condition so I'm picking it up tomorrow after work.

Can't wait for some opportunities to use it now!!

care to enlighten us with what you have bought? my mind reading powers aint too good these days :)

lol I know I would have loved to put a picture in with this but like I say I'm at work so thought I'd put in a teaser...

Here's a clue...a Nikon 600/4...wait, thats too big a clue... :D

If that clue is accurate, WHY THE HELL ARE YOU AT WORK?

I know when i got my big glass i took a day or two off ill, to play. :D

lol well it wasn't a planned thing. I was thiking about buying a Sigma 500 4.5 and mentioned it to my friend a couple of days ago. He said he was trying to get hold of a 600 VR to replace his non VR version and if I wanted it when the time came, he would do me a good price. Well today he managed to get himself a 600 VR so for just not much more than the Sigma I got a pristine 600 complete with lens coat and custom foot on the tripod collar.

That was this afternoon at 3, I started work at 5 lol. Got to get a bag now as Lowepro no longer make the 600AW as a new version is coming out in a few months. Very annoying!

Why would you want VR on a 600 f/4? It's too big to use without a tripod, surely?

You would be amazed how every little vibration shows through the viewfinder once you get up around that focul length - even on a locked down tripod! Add a TC in to the mix and breathing too close introduces movement lol.
VR will help counter all that and allow better monopod performance too.

Thats why they have been impossible to get hold of before the olympics!

Nice, welcome to the supertele club :D

Also, welcome to the totally annoying world of annoying attention when using such a lens in a public place. I've been photographing Deer all day and figuring out dominant males/likley shots on a bank holiday weekend.. Recipe for disaster.

Whats that do?

Can you see the moon with that?

Why do you need such a big lens?

hoho, look at that drainpipe?

I hope your not going to take pictures of my kids with that!

so on and so fourth...

Its actually quite funny at first but after a few minutes it becomes very tiresome.. Don't say I didn't warn you :D
