Ford Mondeo Ghia X 2.0i 2000/X - What to look out for?

Why do you think they are so popular on this forum? Ignore the muppet brigade, they are seriously cheap, loaded, reliable and cheap to run cars and they cost about a grand for a tidy one. I fail to see why people dont understand this, I really dont.

I wonder how much an X reg Polo is worth..

Fox,

One thing I've still not got from you; Based on what you've seen (In the listing) and what I've told you (I know it is hard to say too much without seeing a lot more yourself) what would you actually value the car? Does £1.2k sound about right? Or should I be looking to get a little more knocked off?

Cheers.

I dont think it really matters - its a 1300 quid car. 'Book' price might be a few hundred quid less but if it's a decent car in great condition it might be worth an extra few quid to you anyway.

It has a trade price of circa £650. Add on the dealers margin and.. it's probably about right. Plus dont forget its got a new clutch, cambelt, and brake discs and pads. Thats a good 500 quid worth of recent work you wont have to do yourself during your ownership period (Pads excepted).

It's perhaps 200 quid overpriced so its always worth trying to get some money off it. If its as good as it looks in the ad (And cars are not always as good as they look in the ad!) I'd sooner pay a few quid more than its worth than walk off and buy an average condition one instead for book price.

Don't think you could have said it much fairer to be honest.

Alas, I'll have a sleep on it and see what tomorrow brings! Sure it's only a "cheap" car but it'll be a lot to me at the moment (Certainly most valuable car to date :p).

Thanks for all your help :) Rest assured I'll be quizzing you further if the need presents itself :D

EDIT: PS, the guy has said he'll do it £1200 as I mentioned above, making it seem even more reasonable based on your info. Though it has no tax! Swings and roundabouts...

Oh, sure, I know how good they are, I just hadnt realised that some of the higher specced ones like the Ghia X were falling down to this sort of low price. I really like my Focus, but the idea of trading it in for a better specced and more powerful Mondeo is becoming pretty tempting. I might even be able to stretch to a MK3, a car I actually like the look of.

I might be talking about of my behind but I was initially looking for a Focus before looking at the Mondeo and it seemed the Focus was fetching far more than Mondeo. If this is the case generally then it'd seem certain you'd be able to get a MK3 for yours. I'm sure Fox will be about soon enough to clarify :p

If you really want it turn up to the dealer looking really dissapointed and explain how you've only got 1100 quid. If it all goes wrong and he wont budge you can always go back later and say your Dad treated you to the spare £100 ;)

I assume you've test driven it etc and it drives properly? Is it in as good a condition as the advert suggests? Is it rust free?

My insurance didn't cover me and from what I was hearing they didn't have anything that would either. Car was also not taxed so the test drive was a little short. My dad did the majority of the test drive but I did have a quick go in an industrial estate. Everything seemed perfect, though we did not take it to much about 40MPH-ish, unfortunately. Seemed infinitely better than the Ghia X we saw though.

The condition really does some great for an 8 year old car. You can see slight chips etc around the low end of the bumper and there is the odd bit on the front where you can notice touch ups if you get close but I would say (Remembering my experience with car hunting is low and my opinion may not be worth much) that it seemed certainly above average for a car of its age. Certainly 1 meter back or so you'd notice nothing.

There is no rust that I noticed. Had a relatively thorough look (Brought my dad and dads mate with me to help with stuff like that as I wasn't 100% sure how to go about everything and they seemed to suggest all to be well)... Would obviously have a final quick check over if I did decide to purchase, though.

Cheers.

Dont buy it without a proper test drive - at Motorway speeds as well.

I do find it slightly odd that a dealer wouldnt have sufficient insurance for test drives not a set of trade plates for the tax issue.

Yeah I found this odd too. Both of the cars I went to visit (Despite appearing on Autotrader to be dealers) showed us the car at their house... Having never looked at a car before I didn't know if this was unusual or not... I mean I could understand what they were saying (a lot of cars, not enough room, etc) but didn't know if this was valid.

Will arrange for a proper test drive if possible.

Also, one thing I forgot. Are Mondeos of this age meant to have a "red key". The car only has two "normal" keys. Is this okay?

Cheers.

Sounds like a 'home trader' - basically a trader selling cars off his driveway. You won't get the dealer backup etc and this is why he wont be able to
cover you for test drives.

If its not possible, don't buy the car.

The red key is important - its not actually red, though. It's a black key with no remote buttons on it with a little red square on it. This is the master key and its from this Ford can cut you new keys. Without it, you cant have replacement keys made up.

If I do decide I'd like to persue the car further and go back to have a final check over and test drive, etc, I'll have another check but as far as I am aware there was no red key. I didn't see myself but just asked as I'd assume he gave me the correct answer: No. He said there are simply two keys.

Should the Mondeo have 2 keys + 1 red key or 1 key + 1 red key?

Should the lack of red key make me walk away from this car and look for another or is it just another thing to consider?

Cheers.

I cant remember what the original key situation was - mine came with one remote and one red key. The red key isnt red, so if you dont know Mondeos you'd say you didnt have a 'red key' even if you had this particular one.

Okay I'll definitely check this then. Without the red key is the car a no no?

Gotcha. So 2x normal keys is no worse than 1x normal and 1x red, supposing I only ever lose one of them :p

Anyway, enough for tonight! Thanks for all of your help... Really appreciate it :)

If I may hijack this thread briefly...Fox, what are the Mk3 2.5 V6s like? Just been looking at an advert for a 2001 one that looks in good condition, FSH etc, but the price seems very low...sub £3K and it's only on 70K miles. Are there any particular issues with the larger V6 engines? Im thinking it might be at least worth taking a look, but the dealer is in Hemel Hempstead...quite a drive for me, but worth it if the car is genuine.

Interesting. I like the idea of having that much car for the money. Just wondering if I could stomach the fuel costs... :S
