Vista Ultimate SP1 cost more!!!

Hi all,
Newbie here,

Iv been looking to upgrade from xp to vista ultimate, Iv been searching online for the cheapest deals and iv found that ultimate with sp1 cost more than ultimate!!!
Isn't sp1 free to download like xp versions?

Also is it possible to duel boot between xp 32bit and vista ultimate 64bit on separate hard drives? If i have games already installed through xp 32bit hard drive when i boot up with vista 64bit will the games with dx10 run with dx10?

Pretty much any Vista you buy today should have SP1 included. But yes, it's a free download.

Yes it is possible to boot any OS combination across any number of drives.

I've found a few games won't work properly without being installed, but most work fine.

Get Home Premium, or Vista Business for Remote Desktop.

But yeah most of the features of ultimate are not really worth the hike in cash over the premium version.

I suggest Vista Home Premium and if you do lots of upgrades go retail if not OEM.

yeah If you change your motherboard you cant install Vista again with an OEM version.

The only thing that I would like to see with Home Premium is a way for Microsoft to sell a remote desktop module to add-in for a nominal fee of £20, for my main PC I will certainly be choosing Vista Business when I upgrade as VNC doesn't work with Vista (yet?).

I have had one problem with Vista Home Premium and that was through my own stupidity and was fixed. It is by far better than XP, it is faster. XP has 40 processes after startup, Vista has 60, and Vista is still faster, it does a far better job at optimising the RAM which is something I welcome hole-heartedly with Vista.

Why not put the money towards an VNC Enterprise Edition? The commercial VNC client from the original developers of VNC, fully compatible with Vista and oh-so-much better than VNC Free Edition

just find the cheapest Vista Home Premium x64 SP1 OEM and buy that.

Hmm so if someone buys Vista Home Premium 64bit but OEM they can only use it on one motherboard? That kinda sucks. So i'm forced to pay like £100 for the retail version?

Recently did a new build (new board, cpu, memory, everything) and decided to try and install the OEM copy of Vista Home Premium 64 that I had previously installed on my old and now dismantled machine. To my surprise it activated online without any problems which surprised me as I thought I'd have to phone Microsoft at the very least.

Don't know if I was just lucky as I didn't think that was meant to work.

So I am trapped to this motherboard if I want to keep using my Vista Home Premium 64 bit OEM?

What a load of utter bs.. When I bought Vista from OC I thought it was the normal retail version. Now I cant even upgrade my PC or I have to pay another £60+ for Vista again?

Yes that's pretty much the case. As a rule, no new machine will come with a retail copy of Windows.

I didnt buy Vista with a PC from them though I bought it seperately from their shop, and they gave me one thats supposed to come with a PC? Oh well I didnt realise at the time o.o
