As post title, any time I install the drivers for the HDMI sound on my 4870 my Processor usage goes through the roof and sits around 50% constantly.
Remove them and all is fine.
Now thats all well and good untill I want to watch a bluray
Anyone else come across this rather annoying problem?

No problem here.. Been running hdmi on 8.6, 8.7 & 8.8cats. What process is listed in task manager that is hogging the 50% of cpu usage?

Svchost.exe
More specificaly the Plug and Play.
Just done some more playing around and it appears it is only happening when I switch output away from the 4870.
From what I can tell it look as though PnP is constantly trying to scan the HDMI for my screen/amp.
Out of intrest, which HDMI driver version are you using?

Have you installed the latest HDMI Audio drivers from Realtek? Basically had this issue myself, and its down to the realtek drivers, or was in my case. Removed the realtek drivers, cleaned them off, then used the built in Windows Vista HDMI/HDAudio driver and CPU utilisation dropped right off.

Hope that helps :)

Well after hours of trying every single driver there is I've finaly cracked it.
For anyone else suffering this problem the driver "HDMI_R192" gives full 7.1 with DD and DTS with no screwed up cpu usage

confused.com! ATI HDMI drivers are the ones you need to install, not microsofts or Realtek. I've a Xfi Gamer s/c and it's disabled when I use HDMI from my gfx card.

Realtek provide the sound chip on the ATI cards slimsymeat, ergo also the drivers, ATI just rebadges and includes them ;)
Hence Venares' driver choice has a standard Realtek driver style name heheh
