...does it serve any useful purpose? I can't think of a single scenario where anyone would need a barcode reader on their phone. Even if it worked, which mine doesn't.

There are a few sites on the net where u can scan the barcode to get a direct link to a file or website.... pretty clever!

It's there so you can use addons like this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2780 ;)

Lets you display a barcode onscreen which will take your phone's browser to the same page/URL you're looking at in firefox.

Thanks, that's why I asked, but it still seems a bit....pointless. If you're at the site on your PC I don't know why you'd need to go to it on your phone.

It's useful if you've come across a file you want on the phone but don't have access to the USB cable, bluetooth or a card reader.

It's also how I set up all the apps on my new phone, stuff typing out their addresses on that tiny wee keypad tbh.

Ok then. I'd download them to the PC and bluetooth them over, but as you say, you might not have the dongle with you or whatever.
