On the wagon, sorta
was offered a job the other day but then told that it was no good because it required me to be able to drive a 7.5 tonne vehicle, turns out that only pre 97 license holders can drive these without additional licenses.
what id like to know is how i would go about getting one of these licenses and what it entails, prices? is this also the case for 3.5 tonne class vehicles?

No a 7.5 tonne is and always has been a seperate licence, before 1997 you could drive long wheel base vehicles.

Erm, not quite. ;)

For a Category C provisional licence you must be 21 years or over and hold a FULL Category B (Car Licence).

Minimum age for Category C1 (7.5 ton lorry) is 18 years

Minimum age for Category C1+E (7.5 ton lorry & trailer) is 21 years AFAIK, if your 21 or over, you can go straight for the Class C (HGV II) which includes 7.5t. :)

The Post Office should have a stock of the application forms you will need, ask for a VOC pack (vocational licence pack).

The first stage is to contact your Doctor to arrange a medical. The Doctor will complete the form D4, send forms D2 & D4 to Swansea. This is around £40 at my local Quacks....

Study for LGV Theory Test, 1 day course, - arround £100 - I suggest The DSA book: "The Official Theory Test for Drivers of Large Vehicles"

5 days of lessons will cost you around £800 + VAT.

Plus,

Large Goods Vehicle Driving Test Fee (Weekday) approx £105.00
Large Goods Vehicle Driving Test Fee (Saturday) approx £125.00

Hope this helps. :)

I had to look into this so I can drive a motorhome that weighs 4 tonnes, as R420LA6X2/4MNA has pointed out you need to sit another practical and thoery test its not cheap. You also need to have a medical which costs between £80-100 depending on you doctor.

I am half in the mind just to sit my full HGV licence as I want to be able to tow a trailer aswell which my understanding means I need to take a further test however with the full HGV everything under it is included automatically.

When you say "Full HGV" I assume you mean the Category "C" test? - This will indeed cover you for all types of Rigid HGV, 7.5 ton & over, it will NOT cover you for C+E which is in effect, the only "Full HGV" these days, a pity you need 2 - 3 tests to get it!

LGV C1 - The old 7.5t
Up to a maximum of 7.5 tonnes
(may also tow 750kg small trailer)

LGV C (formerly HGV Class 2/3)
Any rigid truck up to maximum of 32 tonnes
(may also tow 750kg small trailer)
Drivers aged 18+ can obtain LGV C1

LGV C + E (formerly HGV Class1)
Any truck towing any trailer up to a maximum of 44 tonnes.

If you pull a large caravan (i.e. one over 750kg) , then you could need a C+E.
