Portrait photography

When you use a flash you'll probably get harsh shadows across the face/under the chin etc. By placing something reflective low down you can bounce some of the light back up to reduce the appearance of the shadows. This is better then placing flashes everywhere because a face without any shadows at all will probably look flat, boring and un-natural.

Also google 'bounce flash' and you should find some nice guides regards flash techniques.

Basically good portrait photograph is like all photography, it's all about the light, learn how to use it to your advantage and you're on your way to taking some great pictures.

Sorry domthecondom, didnt see your reply until just now. As the guy above posted, its about light and reflectors help bounce light to remove shadows. Try and make sure if your doign head shots that the person is about 4-5ft away from the backdrop, helps remove some of the shadows.

Focus the camera on the persons eyes. always get the eyes in focus.

Have fun :)

Looks like, to me any way, the whole thing is out of focus. Did you use a slow shutter speed?

The picture seems to me just a 'snap' and doesnt really have anything going for it. I would have the lady with out the food and looking away from the camera with a blurred background. Maybe facing slightly into the light/sun.

Not bad compostition. Maybe a tighter crop.

apart from being blurry it could do with being cropped a bit more
also try to have the camera so its parallel to her eyes or just below, this will make her look down which is more appealing than looking up

i would get rid of the food too and get her to smile , she kind of looks like someones just nipped her bum atm, looks more like a candid than a pose

maybe choose a better location too and try some fill flash

colours could do with a little PP
