Been looking for a Seat Leons and Golfs for my Next car. I can get a decent petrol for the same price as a high mileage Diesel on both cars. What's considered high mileage on a Petrol "Vag" engined car?

I think the general rule of thumb is, if it's looked after and serviced then high mileage is fine . But if it's been neglected or doesn't have much service history then stay away, that goes for lower mileage cars also.

All my cars have been unroadworthy before I bought them then :(

Fiesta 1.1 Man 112k (iirc)
Chinq 0.9 Man 82k (km though unsure in miles)
Vectra 1.8 Auto 246k
Omega 2.0 Man 107k
Omega 2.5 Auto 123k

Although none are VAG engines so this post is useless

My Toledo V5 (2.3) is a shade off 140k, and mechanically it's in very good condition. If regularly serviced you should find the mechanicals aren't the worry, it's how long the trim lasts!

I guess it depends which engine, smaller engines (1.4, 1.6) perhaps won't take the mileage as well as the larger capacity ones, and turbo's might be a bit more fragile.

I would say the interior will be an issue before the engine in this case so just look for one that hasn't fallen apart yet and the has the electrics still working.

It's very random, I got rid of the two Xantias both had done 124k miles. On one of them the engine clattered like anything and used stupid amounts of oil but the rest of the car was fine (despite the fact I think I might have topped up the suspension fluid with miracle grow), the other one the engine was still very strong, but everything else was naff.

In the end I got rid of them both.

My folks got 170k out of a 1.3 Astra many moons ago and 250k (actually more then that, it was 250k when he bought it) from a Pug 505, probably would have gone on a bit longer, but my dad decided getting the cam change was a low priority.

Most engines will do 200k if they are treated right. An Audi with 150k on the clock and a FSH may be in better mechanical condition than a Focus with 60k on the clock and no service history.. Its all about how well they have been looked after. Although as a general rule anything German or Jap will be pretty bulletproof... Volvo's too, especially the older ones. Oh and as for turbo's, I know a guy with a Bently Turbo R that has 340K on clock and still running original turbos... but very few cars have that kind of build quality. The fact that it has less of a rev range than most diesels means those engines are just ticking over all the time anyway.
