First and foremost, Van der Meulen told me (without hesitation) that it is a 100 percent guarantee that Home will be released by the end of this calendar year. He has absolutely no doubt that this will be the case, so it looks like the long wait to come Home is finally reaching its conclusion. Van der Meulen also assured me, quite adamantly, that Home will always be a free service -- only premium content will need to be purchased.

I think it has to be out a week or so before LBP is released. They really need to get this thing out the door, its the only thing the PS3 is missing at the moment.

What about "chat rooms" so that only your friends can hear you when you go online and play with them??

I know xbox's service aint perfect but it offers a million more features than sony's and sony really do need to copy half of them

background downloading

downloading whilst system is on standby or off

the list goes on

Its not like xbox live was perfect from the get go. Sony are just taking their time adding all these features.

PS3 has background downloading FYI.

That's not the only thing it's missing. But it will certainly be an improvement to the PS3 that it desperately needs.

It wasn't far off. I remember getting it in the Beta of the original Xbox and it was great then.

But they've had 2 generation to get it right. Obviously Sony had the same opportunity and missed the boat last generation.

Dont go saying PSN this gen is worse than Live last gen. It's not. :p

I really do believe if Sony had thought things through and started online gaming last gen, PSN would have been much nicer on the get go this time.

I never said it was, it's not. However it's no better either (not at PS3's launch).

There also was online play for the PS2. It had the most popular online console game going too, Socom IIRC. So that's no excuse.

So, Basically Sony's first attempt was as good as Microsoft's 1st attempt.

And Xbox Live for 360, Being Microsoft's very very good second phase is awesome.

Making Sony work hard, To better their first attempt.

I just noticed your edit, Sony online last gen, Was tagged on. It wasn't a real network, Not like Xbox Live was on the Xbox.

Except Microsofts first attempt was half a decade before Sony's. So that's no excuse whatsoever really. Sony have been able to look at the competition, how it works on Nintendo's formats, Microsofts formats and even the PC.

true enough. Well I feel they are doing okay in catching up.

That said, The problem they face is the fact the Sony OS is too bulky in comparison to the Xbox 360 one. And I don't know if there is a cure to that.

It will no doubt be able to equal live in terms of features, But I'm not sure how seamless it will be.

Microsoft looked 5 years into the future when developing their system, they took what the games users wanted, needed and would later require, so they built an OS that could be used at all times and added to easily.

Sony claim they have a 10 year plan, but they built an OS that was bloated and none futureproof from day 0. Sony do seem as if they were more interested in the home user than the games user, so they are behind and seem shocked that people want 'x', 'y' and 'z' so badly. Poor foresight on their behalf.

They will get there, the issue is whether or not it will be before the PS4.

I said before launch and I've said it many times since, the worst thing Sony did was not outsourcing the OS and its functions to the West where online implementation is the norm.

They did outsource it - SCEA designed the network implemention but SCEJ didn't want it, and used their own network design instead. It's one of the examples that Kaz Hirai references to when he said 'the hardware guys didn't communicate with the software guys'.
