Ey up guys im after some advice,

At the moment i have a x1950xt 256 which i was sent as a freebee from MSI,

Theres a place in town (competitor so wont say so) that will give me £60 cash for it (which i think is shocking tbh) so im going to part with it and use the £60 to help fund an upgrade, because i cant really afford to put a lot towards im going to try pick a 2nd hand card up, what cards should i be looking at for say £60-£80 i know i can get much better than a x1950xt so i reckon its well worth doing, what do you think ?

Thanks :)

60 quid for a 1950xt is pretty damn amazing, you can buy a 8800GT 2nd hand for that! Or 75-ish brand new- I'd go for it.

Thats what i thought, its a place thats excellent to sell to but id never buy anything from there as there stupidly expensive, id get £54 exactly for it and they will sell it for £100, gd luck to them i say :/

Quality, i figured id be looking at series 8 cards, wasnt sure if someone would mention any ati offerings, id probly be best having a look through the sales threads and check out any ati cards through there, i was thinking 4850's and 8800gt's, whats a good price for a 2nd hand 4850 ?

Thanks guys.

Don't pay too much for an 8800gt 2nd hand. I never see them going cheap enough to be worth it for a standard model that's probably been cooked to death.

If you can find one 2nd hand on the cheap, great. If not you can get an OcUK one for £76.36

Or for a bit more at £82.24 the Gigabyte GeForce 8800 GT OC 512MB

If you can get hold of a second hand 4850 that'd be much better for performance, I've no idea of their 2nd hand value but they can be had for little over £100 brand new so shouldn't be in that range. I guess it also depends on how a 4850 would slot into your existing setup, what have you got?

Which ever i get i feel would be much better than the x1950xt, to get £54 is quality, i wouldnt dream of taking that money if i was to sell it to someone, as its going to a company that seems to know jack about the value of 2nd hand hardware screw em right :D

As for what ive got

e6600
P45 P5Q pro
x2 1gb Corsair Dominator
Raptor 150gb

So should be pretty decent, i figured it would be 8800gt/gts vs 4850 although it never hurts for a 2nd opinion :)

I'm going to get some new components sometime soon, I can only afford to go with an e2180, and for uber cheapness I was looking at a 3850, but I really wasn't too keen on the hit they took when using AA so I looked to the 8800s, after some thought I felt that the only option if I was going to spend any more money was to go for a 4850, I'll try my hand at OC'ing and hope to avoid a CPU bottleneck. It looks like you'll be alright though I'm no expert.

I've spent so long mulling over what GPU to go for, and now I can't find my upgrade stash, it's driving me nuts and I feel that my room is in serious danger of being demolished in a blaze of fury! That'll teach me for skipping the spring cleaning! :p

Well, congrats on getting those funds for your old card, I'm sure whatever you get (4850!) you'll see a world of difference. Do you think I'll notice any difference over an FX5500? :o

How did you manage to bag this as a freebee? I have had nothing but problems with my mobo since January and all I got was a measly Freezer 64, the first of which came with no fan!

I had a 939 MSI motherboard, was a k8n diamond i believe,

The board caught fire and killed the board and my x1950xt graphics card, (im sure i posted here about it), Anyway i got a contact from a freind of mine who knows people at MSI, after chatting with him for a bit me arguing it was the board him arguing it was the graphics cards (the graphics card was sapphire) fault he ended up offering me a swap, i sent him my x1950xt which had been badly burnt and would never work again, i exaplined how i didnt have another graphics card and that i couldnt afford one etc, he offerd to send me a rx1950xt, didnt cost me a penny, its service like that that will make look at msi products in future.

Been offerd a 8800gs alpha dog edition brand new for 35 quid, to say i dont do much gaming would that be a decent card over the x1950xt, keep in mind id sell the ati card for 54 id get this 8800gs and pocket 20 quid ?

Worth it ?

I also had (well still have a useless) K8N Diamond Plus. I have had my original board fixed that lasted a month & also a replacement, which lasted a week. Some research I did on the net shows only bad things about this board and I have also seen a few on eBay with the same problem I have. I have now been forced to take a board upgrade to a new socket, limited to the value of around £50 (with no compensation). It's customer service like this that will make me not buy MSI again!

Whenever i go there they never have any cash to give out!!
