Hi,

I'm not quite ready to make the jump to DSLR's just yet.
So want something slightly better than the usually digital cameras and came across these 2 cameras in BestBuy today.
Sony CyberShot 9.1 DSC-H50/B

EDIT - Updated
And then the Nikon Coolpix 10.1 - P80

Can get both for $340 each so which one do you think is the better choice?
Both have really good reviews.

Cheers

Go for the sony, you'll find the 15x optical zoom very useful compared the the nikon's 3x optical zoom!

Looks to me like you are paying for the mega pixels with the nikon as it has more but the difference between 9.1 and 12.1 isn't worth losing out on the better features of the sony camera!

I'm pretty sure that the Nikon had the better zoom at 18x ? Or am I being stupid? :(

****Edit - My mistake I posted the wrong Nikon camera :( Now all the correct info

The nikon you have shown us has 3x optical zoon and 4x digital, giving a total of 14x, but digital zoom is generally poor and not worth using in my opinion (and i think most other peoples), so only really worth considering the 3x.

The sony has 15x optical and 2x digital, giving a total of 30x, though again only worth considering the 15x optical.

The sony has a much better zoom on it, unless you have pointed us to the wrong link?

Yeah sorry, I've updated it now :) Nikon has 18x optical and 10x digital.
The link should now be the proper camera.

what better features?

Anyway, out of them two cameras - the nikon. (though it does have the same sized sensor as the sony, but more mp.. but meh)

For me the zoom totally out weighed the minor difference in mp. though it's now a different choice of cameras as the op has changed the nikon camera in the first post.

Good coincidence this, I've been looking at the P80 as a compact digital replacement. Currently got the ixus 60.

Just purely talking picture quality, ie ignoring zoom and other features etc. How much better would the pictures be with one of these two cameras than say a similar priced compact digital?

Canon S5 IS. Nikon's point and shoots are terrible compared to Canon's.

the s5 IS is really crap for noise on all levels, my sister got one for her trip to india and she was crying coz of the PQ, she sent it back thinking the camera was faulty :(
