Yes. If someone gets hold of your password for it then 99% of the time it's because you've been an idiot and fallen for a phishing attack.
It'd be different if there was some flaw with the authentication system that allowed just anyone to get in...but that isn't the case here.

The other 1% is probably when someone has a stupid password set that is easily guessable. That's why most passwords are required to have a mix of letters/numbers/etc these days.
I'm sure anyone that's worked in IT or banks will tell you that the amount of security breaches due to lazy/dumb users is phenomenal.
As I said, if it was actually the fault of the system then yeah... they should do something about it. It wasn't, though - someone got the user's account name/password. Most probably due to a keylogger, logging into his account in an unsecure location (e.g. cybercafe) or some sort of social engineering by someone he knows (in rl or online). This isn't something that Valve or anyone can prevent and there's a point where the user has to take responsibility.

Valve really get on my nerves. If you say you havent hacked and they shut down steam its just daylight robbery. Id love to see how that would play in any other industry, you buy something and the manufacturer says you have misused it and come round and take it back off you.

Clearly someone using that account *has* hacked. Valve have shut down the account (only for VAC servers though, it's hardly like they've removed all access to the games).
How else are they meant to do it? Ban someone and then reverse it as soon as they say "but I didn't hack..."? It'll quickly lead to people swapping account details so they can hack away and then go back to their original accounts once they get caught.

i spoke to my american lawyer a couple of hours ago, he has sent a case description to them arguing with hard evidence that i have never cheat, seems im tackling steam on lol
ill hear back within 36 hours of whats going on, i am so stubborn, ill chuck my money at something i dont think is right.
oh, ps, if you comment on the fact i should just buy a new account and games, my lawyer costs $1500 a hour, well a little more, but thats the rough estimate, im curious as to what will happen lol

Im more concerned about the rumors they are banning people who use unlockers to get the achievements....
Valve are banning people for unlocking Valve provided content...? Thats like PunkBuster banning you for completing COD4...

No, that's like punkbuster banning you for using a lvl 55 unlocker.
However, afaik punkbuster does nothing against this...

By definition, the Valve unlocks should provide no advantage at all, simply an alternative.
And you'd find that you didn't have a case what-so-ever. You purchase a license to use the product, subject to their terms and conditions, namely being that you don't cheat.
You cheat, you lose your rights to play the game... so far VAC has never been wrong, most likely that in this case, the account was hijacked.
EDIT: Anything that modifies core games files, .exes and .dlls will trigger VAC, anything else should be fine. Though i'd still class achievement unlockers as cheats, just like allammo in UT games and what not.
I understand perfectly the terms of the licence. My point is that if someone has hacked into the account, and valve concur with you thus deeming it not your fault, you should not face any inconvenience afterwards as you have followed the terms within the licence.
Valve wouldn't deem it not your fault.
You may not have done the hacking yourself, but by having a password that was easily crackable, or by using a public computer, or by downloading smileys or whatnot that may contain keyloggers, it's the fault of the end user.
If I set my steam password to "password", and then my account got hijacked, who's fault would that be? Mine, for being a numpty.
What if you were perfectly security conscious, and in the law's eyes had taken reasonable precautions, yet still had your account hijacked? You might think I'm being difficult, but a line has to be drawn somewhere. Do you think those on this forum who have had their account hijacked consider themselves numpties or intelligent computer literate people?

They do lol, someone sent me something to give me gold weapons + stuffZ, I was banned on a PB server but luckily it wasn't streaming so I got away with it.
I backed up my mpdata beforehand so reimported that afterwards and was fine.
Would have been a shame as I don't even play publics much ;<

From the FAQ, so...
Some skin packs modify core DLL files...as stated on many VAC 'omg I got banned' threads...some skin packs have hidden cheats in them (in the form of modified DLL files) at the expense of a few laughs for the skin pack sharer in question. Valve is not responsible for this, your responsible for your own account.
I decided ages ago after reading this never to install any mods for the game unless I thoroughly trust the website, which again, I have chosen not to.

So following this argument you shouldn't be compensated for things such as identity theft, people using your credit/debit card etc.
