Made me laugh - they're plugging the game constantly, insisting things are getting fixed and added, and in the background the head of the company is quietly selling his stock.

I'd do the same in his position looking at how the share price has plummeted, but still doesn't look good for AoC.

WOTLK is going to kill AOC stone dead I'm afraid.

Isn't it already after the mass exodus in the first month?

I want to see a good competitor to WoW, sadly nothing really even comes close. I remember the hype leading to AoC and it wasn't long before people started dropping like flies.

It’s a shame as there were some things I really liked about it, but there were a lot of problems and ultimately it’s just not as good a game as WoW. If only they hadn’t released it with so many bugs then maybe they would have hung onto more people after the first month.

Funnily enough, a friend of mine linked me to the Funcom shareprice the other day and it started to decline pretty much around the time AoC actually launched. If I saw that my investment portfolio was likely to be worth little more than a small sack of turnips, I'd sell too :p

The one thing that AoC had was different, even innovative, was the melee combat system. Unfortunately it had little else :(

The hype towards AOC was amazing before it was released... So many people flooded the WoW forums saying zomg AOC is going to wipe WoW off the face of the earth etc etc.
People was so sure of this game that they was claiming they had deleted all there kit lol, i think about 99.9% of those that said AOC is a WoW killer are all still playing WoW.
Never quite seen why people hate WoW so much that they are prepared to jump on the nearest bandwagon and hope that it will beat WoW so they can point and sneer yelling "WE TOLD YOU SO"....yet if it fails they quietly come back and play WoW :p

Amusing stuff !!! :D

no game will beat WOW any time soon the marketing for the game was too good.

they have got people playing who had never heard of MMOGs (they are like a wii lol), and as people who have played a MMOG know its hard to quit the first one you strted playing.

Like a Wii most of the players are happy with what they have, the family can play, etc. They dont care about all the technical stuff.

p.s. i hate WOW btw aint no fanboy but gotta give them credit.

Worst mmo I've played In ages , even if aoc was free to play I wouldn't touch it ;-)

I agree, WoW is just too hard to topple, love it or hate it you have to agree they’ve done a great job.

One of the problems is a lot of people aren’t willing to try anything else or even if they do will quickly come back to WoW unless it’s much better in some way. It’s a case of, is it a WoW beater, no, okay wont bother then. It’s a problem with this genre I guess because you pretty much only play one game, with an FPS for example you’d try another FPS that was good even if it wasn’t better than your favourite FPS.

Just cos the CEO is selling some shares doesn't mean the company is going down the pan :p In fact, they are banned from selling their shares prior to any big announcements.

I agree though, that AoC was a massive disappointment. Personally the thing that caused me to quit was the appalling performance on my machine, which comfortably met the recommended specs. Frame rate never got above 15 in most areas, when I did go into a high frame rate area the game was 100 times better.

Yes, WoW came along at exactly the right moment. The mainstream were ripe to dip into a MMORPG, and WoW was quite complete and stable a game to jump into. Very newbie friendly too. Perfect timing.

As for AoC, well, the writing was on the wall long before the game released. Funcom are one of the most incompetent companies there is when it comes to MMORPGs. I'm surprised people never did their homework. Anarchy Online was a mess (and still is in some ways). 6 years later. Funcom should just stick to single player games, like Longest Journey.

I actually ended up finding a cheap copy so out of curiosity and boredom I played AoC for the first month just to see what beta testers had said was a train wreck of a game....they weren't wrong. Well it seemed fun up to leaving Tortage (even with all the instancing and bugs), but after level 20 it all goes to hell, in big way. The worst thing tho, was Funcom's total incompetence at attempting to fix it all. Impossible task really, as the game is fundimentally flawed/broken on so many levels. People I know who kept playing said the patches made things even worse.

So the CEO is selling his stock?....wow, first clever thing he's ever done :p

Funny how the servers are still packed. I am always quietly chuckling to myself over these "AOC is going to die" threads.

Carry on.

Man has a point. What people are quick to forget is that AOC is still making Funcom a profit, even despite losing half its playerbase since launch. 400,000+ players is the same amount as the most popular console game's online playerbase (Halo 3/Call of Duty 4 both have 300-400,000 players on at anytime) as well. It's when the comparisions to World of Warcraft happens that people are doomsaying. The CEO selling some stock doesn't help either.

I'm reading the forums daily , all I see are server mergers posts , if the servers are packed as you say this wouldn't be the case :) my guild had 450 people as from tomrrow all have cancelled there account .

Many of the servers are ghost towns now, i personally have cancelled my aoc sub as its simply a crap game. The gfx and classes are ok, the genre is good and the whole conan "world" is excellent. The game play on the other hand is terrible.

When it first came out it was actually ok to play and xp with, ok there were some bugs but to be honest i only saw them in the pyramid. Now the game has changed so much the single player game is completely nerfed and killing even the lowest elite monster ( even gray ones! ) is next to impossible.

Quite simply its become a chore to play and isnt FUN anymore.

Aoc doesnt have 400k Subs :D

yeah 400k subs my ass!

This includes the tens of thousands of people who have stopped playing but still have play time in credit/game card credit unused. Once these run out the accounts will THEN be set to cancelled. ( like mine... i have 2 weeks of playtime left from the card i bought so my account is still counted in that magic 400k! ).

OK clicking around I couldn't find a single one. It wouldn't surprise me if they did do server mergers as they were very free and easy getting new hardware online at launch.

One of the main reasons I dislike WoW is that despite its high number of subs you login to a server and its a ghost town as they have waaay too many servers.

guess thats why a lot of people i know still go back to swg, and i still keep getting tempted, despite it being a shadow of its former self and not much of a game in todays market, its a game i know inside out...and i do miss my estate haha, and the futile space looting runs for the "perfect" RE parts

No game made will shift wow from the number 1 mmo spot.

That honour will come when blizzard closes wow down and launches its new next gen mmo.

Face it, WoW is here to stay at number 1 for at least the next 2 years.
