Spec me a 3k car (Golf, Focus etc)

Try and get a Zetec, LX's have rubbish seats and soft suspension. the zetec is better speced and has a nice ride. Nothing major to look out for apart from the usual rust and favor FSH over milage

Thanks for the info, think i will get any more for my money with a mondeo? would it be worth the insurance price hike? (not looked into insurance a huge amount as of yet or cars for that matter)

Definately worth looking at a Mondeo, who cares about the extra space - you get that free so if you dont want it you've not paid for it. It'll be better built, better specified, a more modern design, and just.. better at everything other than handling.

Before listening to anything Janesy says please consider the fact he bought a 1.3 litre Ford Escort.

Do you think an ancient Nazi staff car on 4x4 wheels will appeal to the sort of person who wants a Focus or a Mk4 Golf as his first car?
Most people think they want a golf or a focus, because they havent got enough experience of cars to know any better.

I have more fun in my nazi mobile at 50 than I had in my Fiat Coupe at 120.

I'm just adding an alternative way of thinking, instead of just going with the crowd. I can't think of any cooler car for a young bloke looking to spend around 3k than a Mk1 GTI cabrio.

Not out of choice, judge me by the next car i buy, not the present piece of carp that i have to put up because i live in London and i have to endure stupidly high insurance costs. I paid £500 and thats what i'll probably sell it on at, job done. Just because i drive a rubbish car it doesn't mean i'm not entitled to an opinion on a car. Much like a jeweller doesn't need to own the finest diamonds in the world to tell a sun baked dog turd from a rare onyx.

I also drive a focus regularly and its precisely 51127336 times better than my escort.

Citroen Xantia TD.

It was the bestest car in the entire world, ever, and really, everyone else should have the same car as well because it was amazing.

Or at least thats what I thought at the time :D

I never had a Skoda? If you mean the one I learnt to drive in, it wasn't mine :p

I beg your pardon - I knew you never bought it, but I thought it belonged to you? Was it the Citroen that was your first car? :)

EDIT: Question answered..........

Nah it never belonged to me, it was the only car in the family I could get insured on to learn to drive. My first car was the Citroen :)

Maybe that Skodas 54bhp, no PAS and windup windows started my deep hatred of small hatchbacks :D

But back on topic the Focus is a great car but there is no denying the Mondeo is better value - if you dont care about the size and don't particulaly want the sharper handling of the Focus its well worth considering.

Quite possibly yes. Another being, that it actually really was a pile of ****.

To be fair it did the whole A to B without ever breaking or costing more than 5p to run thing quite well. Although with cars like that on the planet no wonder some people see driving as a chore. I think it was Polo based? Had a Polo steering wheel anyway :D

The engine bay was hilarious. It took a while to find the engine in amongst the vast swathes of empty space.

you should see my engine bay, the starter motor is bigger than the engine. Looks very tidy for a crappy first car though - who says you cant polish a turd :D http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=12167858&postcount=2564
