Starring out swear words.....

Tbh, if swearing is banned because it is 'offensive' then you can have the same impact with stars, and if anything its more offensive e.g. "you're a ****" Now if swearwords were allowed then that could only be one insult, but with stars, it can be many insults.

And since personal insults are against our FAQ that's a mute point :p

It would appear that either certain words slip through the net or are actually allowed.

You're pushing it! edit: - sorry was just trying to make a point

The f-word itself brings up two, but are supposedly names of something being described - yet surely this is still an offensive word?

The word for wee and the word for a female dog can be found in a fair few threads too just by doing a global search. The naughty word for poo also brings up a lot of threads too.

I realise mods can't be everywhere at once, but there are a lot more threads with swearies than you'd expect. If people RTM'd without feeling like they've just ratted somebody out, or at least told others to star out the sweary before a mod sees it... surely that would help.

What i don't understand is why the swearwords aren't just put into the filter, i mean t.e.h is in the filter. Just seems silly I've been suspended before for saying a word for wee starting with a backwards q. It's incredibly hard to know what is classed as a swearword here just use the filters.
I've seen an explanation for this (and it did make some sense). Was basically along the lines of - Why filter it when it can be left to the user to actually think about what they are saying.

why swear? restrain yourself, instead of saying "this forum is ****", why not say "this forum is poor", and then offer ways of improvement to the forum?
The said phrase was completely spontaneous and is in no way trying to imply anything

Because swearing is great. :p

I'm fully behind the family forum atmosphere around here, but swearing is a part of modern language and having the starries allows us to speak in a more natural manner every so often.

People who say that there are other words you can use (instead of cussing) are missing the entire point of swearing in the first place.

I still don't fully understand why certain phrases are starred out automatically (for whatever reason) and yet others are left in and people are banned for not MANUALLY starring them out, when a perfectly acceptable automated system already exists.

It's always a bone of contention amongst on-line communities; but in this case it seems that the policy really could do with someone actually thinking about it first and *then* applying a reasoned solution (ie. automated removal of all words deemed unsuitable and then bans for people being smart to try and get round the bans).

This would reduce the workload of the admins. It would also make people feel more confident that they can post what they want knowing it'll be automatically censored for general viewing.

Just a thought! But then what would I know I've only been moderating forums for 10 ****sucking years...

:(

Quite. I only use swearwords for excitement or confusion. Just if personal insults are banned, then honestly, what is the point of banning swearwords, they do no harm and most people learn them by year 4. Which I'm pretty sure everyone on this forum is aged over.

If things like t.e.h and f.t.w. can be starred automatically, why can't swearing?

It'd male it a lot easier for everybody.

The reason I've always understood that to be is that you (anyone) are being trusted to be mature enough to self-censor out profanities, it isn't particularly hard to get round a text filter if you choose to so putting the onus on the user means that you don't have to exclude potentially useful words that contain swearing.

Text speak and internet acronyms like those serve no useful purpose other than highlighting the poster with "I'm lazy" or "I've mistyped", neither of which add anything to a thread.

I wouldn't be so sure sometimes :p

Thats valid then, but if this is the motive for not automating it, then where is the list of banned words so i don't use one by accident. Everyones opinion of swearwords are different. Some people would even consider 'damn' a swearword.

You're missing the point. People who can't control themselves enough to refrain from swearing aren't really the sort of people we want here, it helps us see who reads the FAQ and who doesn't which in turn helps us sus out members.

They're not filtered as the idea is to encourage people to swear less, replacing words with stars is not the ideal solution and is only a temporary measure as you'd be likely to forget to star a letter, or a word out and get caught out.

They're not in the filters because it's trying to educate users so you're swearing less and generally creating a more family friendly forum.

**** this piece of ****! you can blow it out your ***!

With not too much effort, you can interpret that into a derogatory sentence and the stars themselves may as well not be there.

You know nothing. Now accept that and run along back to your cave.

But seriously, I see what you're saying. I won't try and tell people how to run forums, I'm not concerned enough over the situation to do so, but at the end of the day we aren't paying for this forum. If we were paying a monthly subscription fee then I'd expect some leeway on the matter, but as we are not, then the subject is not open to interpretation.
