Starring out swear words.....

Quite. I only use swearwords for excitement or confusion. Just if personal insults are banned, then honestly, what is the point of banning swearwords, they do no harm and most people learn them by year 4. Which I'm pretty sure everyone on this forum is aged over.
Go read a forum where swearing is ok, now see how often the same words are used. It's tiresome seing the same words come up in every other post, regardless of whether or not they're swear words.

And besides that, if the worst swear word was used all the time, it takes away any impact it might have had, it just becomes another overused word. Swear words are an excellent way of expressing something, take that away and it's 90% of the reason to even use it gone.

You're missing the point. People who can't control themselves enough to refrain from swearing aren't really the sort of people we want here, it helps us see who reads the FAQ and who doesn't which in turn helps us sus out members.

That's interesting, but still doesn't really answer the question.

You can keep track of how many posts someone has had censored, so you still know who to keep and who not to, it just means that the reason for having it in (ie. not offending anyone) isn't going to be broken as a swear-word will never EVER be published out.

You know nothing. Now accept that and run along back to your cave.

But seriously, I see what you're saying. I won't try and tell people how to run forums, I'm not concerned enough over the situation to do so, but at the end of the day we aren't paying for this forum. If we were paying a monthly subscription fee then I'd expect some leeway on the matter, but as we are not, then the subject is not open to interpretation.

That's interesting, but still doesn't answer the question, receives 20 bonus points for being insulting and a further 20 for missing the point almost entirely.

Without customers, there'd be no OcUK, the majority of the people here ARE customers, so (ironically) we DO pay for the forum. (Unless someone from OcUK pays for this, NOT out of profits, then you have my apologies.)

:)

I think you'd be surprised at the amount of people who have never bought, or only bought once from OcUK that still make a regular contribution to the forums.

We had a pretty big thread on it a few years ago IIRC...

Either accept you're going to continue to be suspended for breaking the rules or just stop using the forum. Simple.

That's if you really can't be bothered to think before you type.
lolwut  I'm pretty sure i said I'm going to continue to star, and i haven't broken any rules for a while!!

lol...no it isn't. It is comedy gold

OCUK customers pay for OCUK products. The forum is an optional extra that is completely free of charge. You do not have to be a customer to use it, therefore we do not pay for this forum.

I've never had a problem with swearies, why does everyone find it so difficult? Either don't swear or make sure you fully star everything just in case. People know you're trying to swear so does it make a difference what word?

Probably, yes, but the fact remains that OcUK pay for the forums and their customers (me included) pay them.

Don't mis-understand my intention here, I can see why and understand why the "swearing" things is done, of course I can, I just think there's far easier ways to implement it...without removing any of the "benefits" of having a "male chicken"-eyed self-regulatory system which clearly doesn't work or this thread wouldn't exist.

You work for OCUK ?

Forums cost almost zero to run when you have a website already.

Good thread for clarification, which is important.

Im glad we can have ....er and ....ing on the end.

Makes it so much better

Mark has said time and time again that he loses money on the forums though, and what little he makes in the advertising in the top right of the forum comes nowhere near the bandwidth, maintenance and usage costs that the forum puts out.

I get what you're trying to say though, but our custom buys the goods we purchase and the service we get from Overclockers - it doesn't buy us the right to post on the forums and it doesn't pay a wage to the Don's, Underbosses and Commissarios (bar a few :p)

This forum is paid for out of OcUK profits, they get profits from customers, and I suspect (as mentioned) that a LOT of people on here are customers, some people probably regular customers (even more now with free delivery for forum regulars).

Even so, and even if NO-ONE here bought anything from them ever, they should STILL pay attention to the community, I fail to see why normal rational human beings would do otherwise...

We do pay attention to the community... the swear filter issue has nothing to do with listening to the community and everything to do with what the owner wants the forum to be like.

I fail to see your point. Does it matter how these forums are funded?

I'd love to know how he manages to trace sales of items back to the forums.

I've bought stuff because of a post by someone on the forums before, maybe a recommendation of a PSU, maybe a GFX card review. How is THAT tracked back? Where's the audit trail? Excatly, it's not possible to calculate that.

I dare say that the advertising revenue is POOR, but one can only take a guess as to how many sales are directly or indirectly generated through people reading and posting here.

So he wants it to be a place where you star out words and phrases which annoys certain people, and leave in swearwords so that anyone can see them until a mod wakes up, stars them out and then bans someone for a few days?

That's fair enough then I guess.
