My friend and I have just started a long term project to photograph foxes in the wild. Its very early days but the eventual plan is to capture some really nice shots of these animals going about their business. The eventual plan is to remote trigger the camera's and use flashes to get some nice shots but it will all take lots of time and planning. Once we get some good shots it will be nice to look back to the early days to see how far we have come.

I've adjusted the picture using a very quick and dirty levels just to show roughly what the light levels to my naked eye were like. It only got darker, the above photo was one of the first I took. There wasn't really any colour to my eye though as it was too dark so this still looks better than I saw it. I couldn't really make out a catchlight in the eye for example and only noticed it when viewing the images on the screen.

blooming night vision cameras lol!

The frightening thing is, that if you're really good with processing you could probably get rid of an enormous amount of it. I use Noise Ninja, layer masks and a decent A4 tablet, to selectively brush out the noise. It takes a while but its well worth it. Especially if the image is worth the effort.

For those that want to see the %100 crops that show just how unusable these are other than as record shots...

Its pretty soft but 600mm at 1/10 isn't going to be very sharp lol. Noise reduction set to %25 in capture NX also adds to the softness.

And this is from the top right area.

Not so good now eh! lol

does the noise improve much at 6400 & 12800?

Compared to this yes, I'd print something at ISO 6400. Never gone voer it before though until now so no idea what 12800 is like. All ISO's would look far better if there was more ambiant light though...this was an extreme condition. I might do some daytime ISO 25600 shots just to see if it 'could' have any practical use.

I found an ISO 12800 picture from soctland, I'll stick it in here in a mo. Not a good example for sharpness but shows the noise level.
