Hi,

My dad is after a diesel (and yes, I've had the petrol vs. diesel chat with him). And he is keen on the MK5 Golf. think they look quite boring and am sure you can get something better. I was hinting at least a 130BHP Golf MK4. Is there anything else to consider?

Bora Highline, better than the golf because it ain't a golf....... shush people at the back :p but seriously its what I did. cost me less for one compared to golf and was 2 years younger, returns anywhere between 50 to 55mpg.
Thats if your set on a vag diesel. be warned they are noisey and rattly infact I prefer mine at 70mph than I do idling at the traffic lights on a cold start.
TBH I couldn't see anything different with same kit for similar money other than a mondeo at the time....

It has to be said, if you want a VAG diesel then this really is the way to go. It's a Golf with a sensible price tag. Plus it's quieter and more refined.

From my point of view its better than a Golf in every possible way but many people love the hatchbackness of the Golf.

seat leon 150?
like the golf 4, but more sporty

altho the bora is probably the best choice if he's after something not sporty..

a Bora is just as sporty given its.. the same car. You can still fit sports equipment in the boot.

But, but, the owners keep telling us that SEAT is the sporty brand!

doesn't the bora have softer suspension, or am i just making things up? :o
i always thought the bora was more wallowy than the golf..

They do a Bora Sport, I'm sure this means Sporting things like a diesel engine and.. different springs :p

And lets face it a Golf isnt exactly known for its sporting credentials.

What sort of mileage and driving is he going to be doing ? It's just if it's less than 25k and/or mainly shorter runs it's not worth going with an oil burner.

For the sake of offering up something different you could always consider the Passat, you get more toys for similar money but it's even less of a drivers car than a derv Bora/Golf but if all he does a lot of motorway miles then it could be better. I'm sure Merlin will be along shortly to sing it's praises :)

The Bora is definitely not more wallow-ey. It's a stiffer shell and most Bora's have bigger wheels/tyres than the equivalent spec Golf. A trip out in Mum's Golf after being in my Bora was like riding a bouncy castle...
