Hello,

I have played both these by trying them but I've never played them online or bought them. I'm hoping to buy one of these 2, but I'm not sure which one to pick, UT3 would have loads of eye candy but I miss the original ut maps like morpheus or the ctf map with them 2 towers ( I don't know the name lol).

Have they added classic ut maps to ut3 or is it still only new unknown maps ?

How are they online: Are there active servers left, I'm not that interested in onslaught but more in deathmatch and capture the flag... When I played 2004 online at a mate for 30 minutes the servers felt laggy, but he was using 1.0, are the servers fine or are they laggy generally ?

Also I never got the Red Orchestra Ostfront thing, I've played it once for 7 days from a gift on steam and loved it, but I remember someone saying it's a mod for 2k4 and it's free if you have 2k4, is this true or do I need to buy both if I want to play them? Also is Red orchestra still active ?

I'm leaning very much towards 2k4, as it's only 14 dollars on steam and 10 euros in retailers ( out of stock though but tbh I'd like a boxed version of ut2k4, it's a kind of classic... But I might be convinced to get ut3 or even both, I just need more info first, what's been added to UT3 since release? Have they brought back the great maps from the original ut and from 2k4 ? I'm quite eager to play ut3 too tbh as last time I played it I still had a 6800GS, now with an 8800GTS 512 mb + gpu physx I can imagine I can crank up the eye candy far more and enjoy it more ?

What do you guys think, and can anyone please answer my mp questions as I'm buying this to play online, not to play with dumb/cheating bots :p.

In my opinion UT2004 is just a lot more fun. UT3 does look great, but it's missing a lot of the good maps from previous UT's, which was a big let down.

UT2004 has the most players but UT3 has got a lot more players than when it first came out, but nowhere near as much as UT2004 and that is where all the good players still are.

The servers are fine, you just have to look for the best ones and there are many. Yeah, there are many mods including Red Orchestra.

In my opinion get UT2004, but if you want better looking graphics then UT3, but it does still have a few problems that aren't fixed yet.

In my opinion 2004 is the best UT yet.

So is red orchestra a free mod if you already have ut2k4? Also is it possible to install these mods if I'd buy UT2k4 on steam ?

Aside that:
Thank you, understood ! :D

Any other opinions or any regular 2k4 players in here?

I would personally get UT2k4. Although UT3 has a lot better graphics, the game play isn't as good.

you can download them and the best ut was the first one and i think ut 3 is better then ut2004

I'm not too sure about red orchestra as i've never played it, i think it's on steam tho.

I'm not sure if you can use mods with steam. I have a few games on steam that can't be used with mods, but it's better to ask on the steam forums.

Yeah, i seen them on the UT3 forum look pretty good.

Everyone has their own opinion, but for me 2004 was the best, but i guess many people agree the first was and many agree 2004 was, but for me UT3 definitely wasn't better.

^^ What Rev said.

I'd get UT3 though, its got better graphics and is more fun in my opinion. (surround sound works properly in it too :p)

Loads of the classic maps are being converted to UT3 so you don't need to worry about that, plus some really nice new ones coming through on competitions.

For some reason I never got into UT3. Loved both UT2003 and 2004. May well give it another go.

I've got UT2k4 and UT3. I played UT2K4 for hours and hours as it is a good laugh, although a little basic. I've only played UT3 for an hour at most. It looks great but can't get into it.

And the Ballistic Weapons, UT4Ever & Chaos mods, those provide a huge range of 'fun' weapons to giggle at. Remember the walking Doll bomb? The Flesh Dart? The Vortex gun?.. Can't wait for them in UT3....

I think UT3 is a good game and I don't understand the bashing it gets.

But UT2K4 is far superior. More maps, more mods, more people online.

I think that the problem was that Gears of War had raised the bar, with it's cover system and slightly more realistic feel to the characters and weapons. UT3 on the otherhand, is just a cartoon shooter with serious graphics and dated gameplay. If UT3 wanted to remain a fast fps deathmatch game of carnage, frags and bio guns, then it should have been designed less realistically (eg TF2 -fun game & fun graphics).

Personally, I feel that the character animation & gameplay needs to be slowed down. A guy in heavy, shielded bullet-proof suit should be clunky and restricted in movement. A character in lycra should move swiftly but vunerable. In UT3, everyone moves at the same speed - very fast.

And it is this that confuses me - the graphics are astounding, they look realistic with fantastic textures and lighting. Yet the gameplay is totally unreal (in know it is Unreal Tournament) and makes the game disjointed.. UT2004 was the same, but the graphics made it feel 'right'. To be honest, the original UT was the best version.

I'm not really interested in GOTY, Unreal, and Unreal 2...

I have GOTY on my lappy ( p3 600 mhz, 192 mb ram, 8 mb integrated ati rage mobility) already...

Also, spending 25+ (€) on games is a no for the next few weeks...
