Replacing PS3 hard drive ?

Not a size limit as far as I'm aware. The biggest 2.5" SATA drives which are readily available on the net are 320GB although there are bigger ones due out very soon.

You can actually mod the drive bay in the PS3 to connect a 3.5" drive via eSata so you could go up to 1TB if you wanted to, but this does mean having an external HDD caddie sitting next to the PS3 which also requires it's own power supply.

Thanks for the reply Joebob.... now where are the drives on OcUK's web site... ;)

The only limitation is that it has to be a 9.5mm height drive, there are (400GB and 500GB) drives that are 12.5mm in height.

I will be going from 60GB to a 320GB Samsung drive as soon as it is delivered.

That is true for the older PS3's but when switching my 80GB to a 320GB I had to load up firmware via cd-rom before it could format the drive.

I believe that on newer PS3's they are storing everything on the hard drive, not sure why though, there must be a reason for it?

I have the 60 gig version do you think I will have to do the same as you did?

I am not sure mate, until its clear what the exact reason is for storing firmware on the HDD it is hard to tell.

If I were you I would just download it off the net and stick it on a cd-r anyway, best to have it ready rather than find out during the installation that you need it.

I didn't on mine so I wouldn't imagine so.

Mine's a 60gb as well and I did not need to download the firmware after I swapped the drive for a 320gb hdd.

When did you guys switch your HDD's?

If the size of the firmware is the issue then it may not have applied if you done the HDD swap more than a couple of months ago. If anyone has a 60GB and is upgrading the HDD soon let us know how you get on with it.

WD or Fujitsu are two I've seen used without problems.

I will be going from the standard 60GB to a 320GB Samsung soon (being shipped yesterday) and hope I won't get any trouble with formatting the new drive.

I will be putting the complete system on a 2.5" external drive and hope to be able to put that backup on the new drive, any special things I need to know before doing the switch?

I can't really give any advice in regards to getting your data off your current drive and back onto the new one as I switched mine as soon as I got it out of the box.

What I can say though is that if you do have to upload firmware first then make sure you label the folders exactly as they tell you. I thinks its a folder on the cd-r/flash drive called PS3 with a folder inside called UPDATE and then the firmware in there. (Folder names have to be in capitals)

If you still have your PS3 manual then there is an exact step by step guide how to it near the back, stick to that and you will have no problems even if you do have to load firmware prior to the formatting of the new drive.

Well just installed mine everything went smoothly except for me rounding of one of the 4 screws they are buggers to undo.Took the 60 gig drive out and replaced it with the new 250gig drive(Thankyou OCUK for a speedy delivery)

New drive is reading as 232gig so am very pleased just restored all my saved files and have now started to redownload all my stuff from PSN etc.

It's the downloading part that is taking ages:D

LOL, you're not on your own there mate, buggers aren't they!

Upgraded mine the other week to a 320Gb Scorpio Blue and used some random straight-out-of-a-Christmas-cracker screwdriver on the screws because I was too impatient to wait for my Brother to come home so I could borrow a proper one. As soon as he got in I borrowed one, got 3 of the screws out straight off, and got the WD40 out on the rounded off screw.

It's really straight forward, it's just the tightness of the screws. Just check out youtube for some guides, that's what inspired me to do it in the first place. Make sure you have a decent screwdriver!

I used a pair of pliers to undo the screw I had rounded lol:D

Wondering if maybe I should have purchased a 320 drive now:(

I couldn't find a pair small enough...seriously unequipped here, LOL! I usually use the same screwdriver for everything PC/Console, but these were just that bit too tiny, bloody things! WD40 did the trick though, God bless the stuff.

Maybe you should have matey, I suppose only time will tell! :) Only reason I got the 320 is because I've only just got my PS3 and I didn't want to do it again for a while. Plus, I was quite shocked as to how fast the original 40Gb drive filled up too in such a short amount of time.

I thought I would get a 160GB drive but as soon as I saw the price difference between that and a 320GB the choice was easy.

No delivery of my HDD though so it will have to wait until tomorrow :(

Good to hear that it was a simple process for you :)

Though your experience of not having to preload the firmware goes against the thoughts that the firmware was getting to big for the onboard flash chip.

I wonder why they did switch the firmwares location to the HDD on the newer ones?
