We will be on solid state soon anyway.
Not for a good while, it's like £400 for 64Gb isn't it?

Not had a PS3 for long, where do you see the size of remaining HDD space remaining in the menus?
I did a backup yesterday so I can do the swap as soon as I get off work but I am confused about the size.
I have a 60GB drive, the PS3 says the drive is 55GB and I have 15GB free, so logically that would mean I have 40GB of data yet the backup file is 32GB.
Am I missing 8GB of stuff or is the backup data compressed?

Backup is done now, I think it was just over an hour for the 32GB, I heard that my new 320GB drive was delivered at home today so tonight I will change the drive and put the backup on again.I think some files compress better than others on it / take more time, if you don't mind doing the reinstalls / re-downloads, deleting stuff from game data (not game save data, obviously) and nuking demos can somewhat reduce the size and greatly increase the speed of your backup. I went from a 46 minute 23gb backup down to an 8gb 8 minute backup by doing this.

I don't mind that it takes an hour or longer, I just start it up and go watch TV, play on the PC/PSP or play with my girlfriend![]()
Even if it would fit it would be too hot, maybe too noisy and the speed increase wouldn't really be that noticable.Reckon its worth it to put a 300GB velociraptor HDD in there?
edit: 15mm hight...damn![]()
Got the old drive out, found a perfect screwdriver for the 4 screws, the first three went well but the fourth was welded to the frame so that turned into a goddamn round hole
So I had to get a small ironsaw and make a groove in the screw to get it out with a bigger flathead screwdriver.
After that it was easy, I did not have to install the firmware again with a USB stick and it is currently restoring the backup.
I used a 160GB external 2.5" drive so I did a full backup/restore which worked brilliantly. What storage size is you USB stick mines only 2gig so decided to only back up my game save files?

One thing that I noticed was that the PS3 reserves ~12% of the storage space as I had 8GB missing on the 60GB drive and 36GB on the 320GB drive, maybe because that way you can't fill up the drive 100% ????
Hehe, I'm not a n00bDont Forget the good ole school boy error when it comes to drive size, as manufactures measure drive size as 1 gig = 1000 meg, 1 meg = 1000 bytes, were as the OS measures 1 gig = 1024 meg and 1 meg = 1024 bytes. So its pretty normal for a 320 GB drive to show as about 300Gb, the other used space is the PS3 system files, just like you said.

the size of the drive is 298GB after formatting, my backup was 32GB and after that I had 230GB free, so that means that after the backup 68GB was used so that means 36GB is 'missing' somehow.
Tragically the PS3 reserves a percentage of the hdd space. I was confused myself, I've lost the orginal article but having a quick Google, on a 320gb drive you end up with 263gb of 298gb free, which fits with your numbers.
